Question about keys

I'm sure I could probably call the dealer on this question, but let's face it...you guys have a wealth of knowledge about these bikes and if anyone knows about these...it's you!

I recently picked up my first Ducati from an insurance auction (see Hyper build project thread) and it only has one black key. I know enough about the ducs to know that there are two black keys, a red key, and a key card when you purchase from a dealer. If I remember correctly, ducati has encoded keys, and without the red key or the key card, it's next to impossible to obtain another key for the bike.

Is this still true? I've only got one key and I'm guarding the damn thing with my life for fear of losing/misplacing it.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

buy a gun safe or a lockbox at your bank vault. do not lose that key! better not even ride at all just stay home and keep a eye on it. lose that key and you will be walking.

Somebody has to know who the last owner of that bike was. If you can get your DOT to run the vin number it should give you their name. Also maybe talk to the auction company to see if they can give you the Insurance companies info. They took the bike to the auction so the auction company should be able to provide you with their info. Then you could contact the insurance company to see if they can get the key for you through the insurance agent that totaled the bike originally.

The last six #'s of the VIN are 005762. That'd be way to easy of it's the same bike!

The title for the bike should be here today. I was thinking about contacting the owner and asking if they still have the stuff for the bike. That's not too shitty is it? "Hey...I bought your wrecked bike, hope you are ok. BTW, do you still have the extra key for it" Just sounds kinda funny.

Not really, its no big deal.
Think of it this way. What if you wrecked your bike, and somebody called you and explained the situation.
I know if it happened to me, I would have no problem mailing a card or key if I had it.

Ducati no longer has the Red key. Just that code card. Good luck getting hold of that code card.

Not the same. My last 3 were 862. If anyone has those and can tell me the last six I will get the card to them.
