high mileage ducati or garage queen
hello all, I am coming from the bmw world of motorcycling where people brag more about what the odometer says and was wondering what people have on their hypers.
the deal is that i have the good angel of the f800gs on one shoulder, and the dark angel ducati hyper on my other shoulder. i know that they are not a direct comparison but the do put down similar power and have similar pricing and i am want both, but alas this cannot happen. the bmw is versatile but just not sexy. i have ridden both and the head says gs while the heart says hyper, but what kind of mileage are people running with?
anyone have over 20,000miles plus? Is the myth of ducati reliability really just that, a myth? i would take care of both, maintenace, garage drool seccesions, but i just want some one to tell me that the hyper can thousands of miles and keep on ticking.
let me know, i am really tired of just being a voyeur on this forum and want something new and shiny in my garage. What are your odometer readings?

I can't speak for myself but I have heard many people talk about the air-cooled 2 valve DS engine that is in the Hyper very highly. Reliability I have heard is very ironed out with this engine, and Ducati seems to have improved quality control in other areas very well as of late. I haven't heard of any issues with the Hyper (why I'm considering one myself... it's between that and a Monster 1100S for first Duc, the Monster has the same engine).
Hopefully be able to report on my own Odometer very soon..

One fello on DMF has over 100,000.00 miles on his 900 Monster!
Mate of mine has over 25000 km on his Tard and he tortures it!, still going strong.
Keep good oil, air filter and oil filter and you are 99% of they way, do belts and shims as per service as it will last.

Ducs are not for everyone, they do require more TLC. However they also satisfy like no other.

I've never heard of anyone drooling over a BMW? Get the Ducati and wake up those sleepy BMWOA rallys.

Check this thread: RIP my 900SS ... 178,500km's. Granted, this is not the (exact) same engine as in the HM ...... it's 1100 mill is the logical evolution of the 900 2V In BMW speak: R75/5 and R100S
I see your dilemma ..... there is more to this than just engine reliability; I think that's the least of your worries. As has been pointed out, Ducati's need a tat more TLC than BMW's (even the fake ones with Rotax engines - yup, trying to start something )
Good luck with your decision.

PS - thanks, Tyler, definitely oops

They have a 2 year warranty. You could buy one and if it's not reliable after 2 years trade it for a new bike.
Haven't had a single problem with mine.

I wouldn't mind an 800gs but you can only ride 1 motorcycle at a time. The hyper is really just a thrashing tool.
If you can't have both and you are seriously comparing a hyper with a BMW then you should buy the BMW...because be honest..you really don't deserve to have a ducati. :-)

I have both. The power numbers may be similar, but the seat of the pants power doesn't come close on the beemer, unless you always ride near redline. The duc has gobs of pull at any rpm.
The two bikes have totally different purposes. I think it would be better for you to determine what you would like in your only bike. If you want to travel longish distances, the hyper is the wrong bike. If you want to go off road, the hyper is the wrong bike. However, if you want to go for day rides into the twisties, giggling the whole way, the hyper is definitely the one you want.
