fork q's

gents, used the search function but didn't find what I needed.
I need the stock oil level/volume and viscosity.
I need the toque specs for the axle nut, axle pinch bolts, caliper bolts, and t-clamp bolts upper and lower.
I noticed upon disassembly the lower t-clamp bolts were very tight, 25ft-lbs+.
Also interested if anyone has tracked/recorded different oil levels and viscosities?
I installed the race tech .92 springs and just finishing up, thanks!
Bill

Marzocchi DOES have springs for us! stock is (.86) you can get the stiffer (.92) (.96) and a (1.0) but you will have to make a 43mm OD prelaod spacer, I'm hoping a 1 1/2 in. PVC pipe will work as a spacer.

The problem is that the springs for the 50mm fork that Marzocchi has is for a 5 in. travel fork, and we have a 6 in. travel fork, there are NO drop in springs for the 50mm 6 in. travel fork, so we have to make the 5 in. travel springs work, they are shorter, so we have to make longer preload spacers to make them work.

This is what you do, take out your stock spring and preload spacer, measure the overall spring length WITH preload spacer, and then take the new shorter spring and make a longer preload spacer so that the OVERALL length of the new set-up is just about 1/4 in. longer than the stock length. Thats it!

The oil level is between 100mm to 140mm, this is measured with the forks totally compressed, springs out, measured from the top of the fork. The starting point is about 120mm. The higher oil level (100mm) the stiffer the fork will be thru its travel. the lower oil level (140mm) will be softer.

The stock fork oil weight is 7.5WT when you go to the heavier springs go to 10WT or 12WT fork oil.

The cost of the new springs is about $100.00 a pair! GREAT PRICE!

But before you heavier riders order springs, you might want to try the higher
oil level, (100mm) just to be sure, and all it'll cost is the price of the oil!

If you have any tech questions or want to order fork parts or springs, you can call Johner, (EX126) at Marzocchi USA (661) 257-6630

Now you know, Aloha Alex
Hope this helps, Aloha Alex

Torque Specs, also the oil level of 104mm is more important that the 480 mls which by general consensus is not enough, 480 mls will give you an approx height of 160 -170 which is too much.

Aim for the 104 mm height measure and you can't go wrong.

Hi Bill:

Stock oil per WSM:

Recommended oil:
SHELL Advance Fork 7.5 or DONAX TA
Standard capacity:
0.480 cu.dm per leg.
Standard oil level:
104 mm.

Torque settings Nm +10%:
Front axle nut 25x1.25 - 63 Nm
Caliper bolts 10x1.25 - 43Nm
Bottom Fork Pinch bolts 6x1 - 8.5Nm
Top and Bottom Triple Clamp bolts 8x1.25 22Nm

I haven't messed around with oil volume and I'm still running the stock springs. For my weight 165lbs and the crappy roads I ride, I found a comfortable setting with the compression almost all the way out and the rebound 1/4 turn out. On smoother roads I add a turn or so of compression. This is with the S model forks. I get some dive on braking so I'm interested in how the .92 springs work out for you.

Thanks everyone!
when setting the oil level the springs are removed and the fork fully compressed?
Forgive my ignorance it has been a while since I have had to do this.
Regards, Bill

There are a few ways which you will hear of, slide the outer stanchion right to the base of the inner stanchion, in a vertical position fill until 104 mm from the top, maybe 2 mm less, the spring displaces very little anyway.

(edit) make sure you pump the cartridge up and down to bleed any air out or you will obtain a false reading that will be too low.

finally feedback
100mm oil level, no springs
.92 race tech spring
10w silkolene fork oil
compression 1/4 turn out
rebound 1.5 turns out
no spring preload except for one RT washer on top of the spring
I pulled the forks up past the second line in the t-clamps, they are pulled out about .5"
I have a more linear front end now, more feel through the handlebars and I got rid of that constant bottoming.
The stiction is gone, because I found the lower triple to be WAY TOO TIGHT!
I torqued it to 12ftlb and it is probably the solution for 90% of the fork complaints.

Good luck!
