ILLEGAL speed trap or just a speed trap
i posted this at the tail end of the recently DELETED thread but i'll do it again..
i just heard in phoenix they now have speed ticket writing cameras every 1/4 mile or so on certain freeways around the city, apparently half the town has been sent a ticket because they made 2 million on tickets in the first month of operation. now everybody is driving around in what must seem like slow motion like programmed droids doing 55 mph. can anyone in phoenix confirm this? a program like this could spread like wildfire. is your town next??

Which part is BS, Chuck? The place is frikkin' infested with speed cameras, and they're starting to put them up all over Tucson, too. There's a movement making its way through the legislature to have the things banned altogether, and I hope it works...

What a bunch of fascists. I was endowed by my creator with the unalienable right to speed.

Well, hells bells. I've been gone for a year and a half and the place has gone to shit.
Last I knew there was one five mile stretch on the 202 North in Snottsdale where there was a series of cameras, and there was talk of removing them, but that was all there was.
There's red light cameras all over the place, but that's a different thing.

They damn near went up overnight, it seemed like! It's just a gigantic money grab, under the guise of "safety"...

That's really too bad. One of the things I liked about Phoenix - the street cops had better things to do than write traffic tickets and traffic hauled ass.
I guess that's over...bummer.

We had those in Ontario many (many) years ago, and that was the exact criticism, ie it did nothing to stop the speeder/reduce the danger. Getting rid of them was part of the election platform of the next government, but guess what? We now have even tougher speeding laws to the point of having a speeder's license temporarily suspended without due process, or having one's car impounded and destroyed, not to mention a very hefty fine, this, for doing *30mph* over the limit. The photo-cameras, technology from California IIRC, were replaced by "elite" Highway Rangers, out to throw the book at speeders, especially "racers." I'd rather pay a fine in the hundreds of dollars assessed by a photo camera, than lose my bike, and pay a fine of thousands of dollars. If these cameras keep LEO's backed by legislation and public opinion off the higways/roads, *keep 'em*! On a bike at least, the plate is easy to place so to avoid an accurate photo. Oh, I forgot, that's a fine too.
Side bar: I'm amazed nobody has come out with a clear license plate covering that has LCD ability to cover-up a license plate number with the touch of a switch.
