new victim
I am an official and confirmed Hypermotard owner. She is a red 2008 standard model.
In the way of introduction: I am not a hooligan, but a law abiding middle-aged gear head toiling in the silicon valley tech corridoor. I have rented BMWs and Harleys, like the GS1200 in Jackson Hole last summer, but this is really my first bike (MSF course last fall). I am no stranger to Italian machinery, coming from car side of the house.
I bought an HM because I like the stability and confidence inspiring ergos, and my northern cali hood is full of tight, well paved, and twisty stuff. My 3.2 work commute requires torque for the hills, and I fell in love the styling of this red and angry mongrel. It is a total toy, to be taken out on those early weekend mornings, and sometimes to work.
I have used the search function a lot, but a few things remain.
BAR ENDS Q: The PO yanked the folding mirrors and installed the DP items. They work well, but I know have these stubby, exposed bar ends (see pic). Should I just get some sliders from Rizoma in red and call it a day. That bolt at the end of the bar end slot does not hold the cable tension, does it? Rizoma seems to have short and long ones, I am assuming both will work?
SHIFTER Q: I have seen threads where riders with big feet upgraded to Rizoma, Sato, or other rear sets to get more distance between the peg and the shifter. I put the factory adjustment at max, and I still need more distance for my RevIt boots. The adjustable rear peg I just ordered from shift-tech should get me a better angle and some more distance to wedge my foot in. I am also considering enlarging or lengthening the rubber insert on the shifter itself...somehow.
Other than that...My example has 3495 miles and I let the first owner take care of the depreciation. I have changed the oil, adjusted tire pressures, and read the owner's manual cover to cover...Can't wait to get out on the local roads.
Regards to fellow HM victims,
Luke

Nice bike Luke! Great choice!
Shoot me a PM when you're ready to ride! I'm available most Saturdays or Sunday afternoons. We could meet at Alice's if we were to ride Hwy 35 or 84.....or in Los Gatos if we ride out Uvas Canyon Rd.

ciao Luke -
congrats on your new hypertard.
there is a group of about 7 bay area hypertard owners that do rides up in the santa cruz mountain roads fairly regularly ... pm cassos (christian) here on ducati.ms, as he is the ringleader of the hypermotard owners club.
also, consider attending one of the bay area ducati bike nights ...

Congrats on the new bike, hope you love it. Looks like a vintage Ferrari steering wheel in your avatar. What model?
Can't tell from your picture what the bolts on the end of bars are doing. I have to assume they're holding caps on there. They have nothing to do with any cables.
Just about any bar ends should work including Rizomas. I'd keep them short, mainly because the bars are already pretty wide. It looks like you have over an inch of exposed bar (I can only really see this on the left side) so you'll also want to move the grips and switchblocks out so that the outside edge of your grips almost comes into contact with the inner edge of the bar end. Do a search, there are lots of threads about adjusting levers and various controls that will help with your adjustments. Just be aware that Ducati uses small pegs in the controls and those pegs fit into holes in the stock bars. You might want to use this as an excuse to replace the stock handlebar with a stronger bar, remove all the pegs and place everything where it works best for you.

All right guys, once again we have a perfect clean sky for this weekend, let's ride on Sunday: Alice 11am or Gazos Grill at noon.
I have new Iridium spark plugs, as many as I have valves
I must have gained gazillion of horse power
I can't wait to try

Welcome Luke.
We'll stop by Bill's place between Alice and Gazos so that you see how your Ferrari will look a few years from now
