Custom oil coolers
Brisbane. www.are.com.au have been developing air/water intercoolers for turbo's and have stumbled across a core design that is extremely efficient for oil cooling. Manufacturing curved cores is not a problem. They are still on holidays till monday (Jan 19), will ring and enquire on possible custom 37mm thick core (curving may allow 50mm core), increase width of 300mm, and of course the ubiquitous thermostat. It could also be made higher but the finned alloy regulator/rectumflyer above the cooler may have to be relocated.
Instead of guesstimations & postulations etc, I would ask the following of all you people whom are dead serious about a better/bigger oil cooler, for all the right technical reasons meaning thermo control for cold weather (and not just bling).
Could you please sit down with ya girl, look, contemplate, measure and think some more on how it should be constructed leaving sufficient room for front wheel travel etc.
Alex and Mooner, you guys already have Febur/NCR products. What is fantastic and what would you do better if you could with their designs? Where the oil lines are joined to the crankcase, the lower oil gallery has an arrow, does this indicate direction of flow?

Heya Chezzi, when doing my forks I checked out the clearance and there is sweet FA you can go down so widening it is the best option and or taking it higher and tilting it.

My tape measure together with the angle of the dangle seems to suggest the same, but if you look from the side there is substantial room for a thicker core. The 2 sizes that would probably work are 37mm and 50mm, standard oil cooler is about 30mm thick.
A.R.E. are only about 40km from home, so I would be prepared to let them use my bike for development.
For Skylines and Silvia's they make oil coolers etc to replace the standard grill, so I think they've got the bling factor covered. What we need is more efficient cooling with winter thermo back up.

I don't know how keen I am about relocating the "rectumflyer" as I think it should have good airflow. How about an integrated stone guard for both it and the cooler? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

As the effeciency of the new core will be far greater than stock, oversized will not be necessary. Rectumflyer can stay where it is.
As the inlet/outlet fittings are at the top, where there is plenty of room behind the cooler, there is space for a thermo and bypass if it adds bulk to the cooler.
Rectumflyer is indestructible, no stone guard required, and as oil coolers are under pressure (as per oil pressure of 60psi +) compared to radiators with pressurized caps of 14psi average, oil coolers are made with a much heavier guage alloy in the core and therefore stone damage resistant.

Chezzi et all, I just bought a 285 x 100 x 50 Setrab cooler, will have to buy adapter fittings for the top and make some new mounting points to match the cooler however it looks very easy.
Paid 51 bucks NZD (27 US), size should be perfect, would rather ductape half off in winter and keep the old bag cooler in the summer, we have been having 38 - 42 deg days!!!
Bike has been running at 110 deg C, have Zard headers, Homigroni Slipons and DP ECU at +14, K&N with air box done top and bottom so there is no restrictions to stiffle it.
Let ya know what the running temp is once I fit it up.

Hope it works Herman (Munsterman), I'm no expert but what I've learnt thru research is oil pressure, oil line diameter, size of cooler (core tube size + number of cores) will give you a specific flow rate, combined with surface area within the core which determines the amount of heat transfer.
Your cooler has 13 rows compared to 6 as standard, after you cut those ugly brackets off the end can you give me the total dimensions of the core?
Please send photos of fit up etc.
Ps. Herman, my handle is pronounced "GETZI", with a 'G'. I'm not cheesy

Poo!!! I fucked up there eh, Typo on my part, you will understand when you get to my age
Yeah I did some research as well, Setrab are a good brand and well made, according to their site it should work fine.
Mooner or Febur owners, what temperature difference did it make with the new cooler?
Looking forward to getting it on, will be well worth it I think.

Standard cooler core is 240x80x30 6 row.
Custom 300x80x54 with thermo at a rough estimate is going to be about AUS$720, Richard will confirm later this week.
For the electronic geeks among you, two 12v 80mm dia fans mounted on the back and thermo controlled would work brilliantly in slow moving traffic.
Anybody out there?

Sorry, forgot what that was like. I'm a 57 model.
Wait till the hair on your head grows inward and comes out your ears and nose.
