lane splitting on a hypermotard?
Hi everyone,
This is mainly directed to California riders but anyone can chime in here. I'm considering trading in my 1995 900 Supersport for a Hypermotard, I'm totally sold on the Hypermotard except for one thing. Even with the mirrors folded in (I'd probably install stalks instead) the thing is 38" wide compared to my 900SS which is only 31" wide. As I commute on my bike I lane split a lot, both on the freeway and on city streets, especially on city streets. So for all the lane splitters out there, do you find the bike too wide? Was your mobility at all limited as compared to other narrower bikes you may have had before?

Hell no. But I came off a big BMW enduro so...I only have problems when it's extremely narrow. That's when only the superbikes can get through.
Just be careful

Funny - I've only come from seemingly bigger bikes - r1200gs & e900 - so I find the Hyper about as narrow as anything could be! I did redo the mirrors so that helped. It might be that it is so nimble that it makes splitting really easy for me. Hope that helps.

My other bike's a CBR and it's a little narrower than my Hyper. I did switch to stalk mirrors as well. I only find it's a problem sometimes when splitting but a common mod is replacing the handlebar and you could always go with a narrower setup too.

I have a lot of lane splitting experience going from the 900 ss to the Hyper my good friend has one that I ride from time to time. the bike is very nimble and allows you to weave around mirrors I find that you have to pay attention to mirrors a lot more. lane spitting is waaay easier on the 900 ss you can just ride straight as an arrow thru with the ss.

I live in LA commute Rain or shine... love the Hyper...
Perfect commuter tool .... first mods though are to remove the stock hand guards mirrors... way too wide.. I cut approx .5 inch each side got the DP hand guards and rizoma mirrors ... works great rarely do I hit anything, the bike sits pretty high and my mirrors rarely touch anything...

I also live in California and commute 40 to 50 miles per day to my office and I find the way too wide. I have an SV1000S that I have narrowed down to 29" and a DR400S (that I have SM'd myself) that is about 32" wide, but I am running Dual Star mirrors.
On the DR, I find that the fact that I only have consider the bars (that are just above most sedans and right at the height of small car based SUV's) offsets the extra 3". On the SV I have to focus on the bars as well as the mirrors.
I now have all the hardware needed to remove my Hyper guards, etc. - I plan to run Dual Star mirrors and cut the bars down - my goal is a finished width of 30"
My Two Cents

If ya lane split on da back wheel, da footpegs become da widest part.

I set my bike up specifically for lane sharing. I cut approx. 3/4" off each end of the Henry/Reed ProTapers and installed real hand guards and a high mirror, which actually works well compared to bar-end mirrors. Not the prettiest, but extremely functional.
