Looking for input on Exhaust combo's

Alright, I have settled on the Zard Penta full System. Modding the hyper is new to me. DO I need a new ECU, if so where can I get it? What else is a must, what are the pit falls? I was thinking of the Nemesis ECU on desmoworks in conjunction with modding the airbox.. Please tell me what I do not know here.. Duc's seems to have some more complications that my experience with Jap bikes.. Will the stock ECU work fine? What does open loop and closed loop mean? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Wink Near Endless Possibilities...

First off, the "open loop", "closed loop" question is easy, but it is not really that easy to explain in detail...

You can Goggle it on the 'net and get all the info you could possibly ever need, but to try and put it simply...

- A closed-loop EFI system uses a "Lambda", or "O2" sensor, in the exhaust pipe to read the oxygen level in the exhaust gas after combustion. Data from this sensor, along with other sensors for data such as throttle opening, ambient air temp, intake air temp, intake air flow, ignition advance, RPM, etc., is interpreted by the ECU which then determines the amount of fuel to inject and over what duration.

Closed-loop systems normally do not need as many sensor inputs as open-loop systems, and are particularly useful for controlling emissions, and as such are very popular among manufacturers these days to meet various governmental emission regulations.

- Open-loop systems do without the O2 sensor in the exhaust, and base their injector volume and/or duration based without any "closed" feedback, or "loop", but instead just on sensors as mentioned above - i.e. ambient air temp and pressure, intake air temp and flow, throttle position, RPM, etc.

Both systems use "maps", but open-loop systems tend to be more dependent on these pre-loaded maps, which are essentially nothing more than instructions of what the system should do under a given set of circumstances.

Closed-loop systems tend to be more dynamic systems, and can be more self-correcting. Often time they are also system that "learn" a bit about where and how they are operated, and in a sense write their own self-correcting "maps" over time, constantly changing them slightly based on things like altitude, rider style, operating conditions and load, etc.

However, it gets a bit more confusing because almost all "closed-loop" fuel injection systems don't just operate in "closed-loop" mode, but usually have certain situations and operating parameters where they operate in "open-loop" mode and ignore the O2 sensors, like during warm-up, for instance...

Yep, simple... Yet confusing.

Please realize those above are very oversimplified explanations. It is a complex subject, and there are many different injection systems out there that operate in various different levels of open- and closed-loop.

Some, as you will find shortly enough... Come from the factory with a closed-loop system, but as soon as you start modifiying the bike and/or the exhaust system you will be operating an open-loop system.

Me?

I use a Quat-D exhaust system in conjunction with a Ducati Performance Termignoni 2-1 exhaust system kit "race" ECU, a GDS airbox lid, a DNA air filter, and tune the fuel trim of the ECU with a Technoresearch VDST computer interface rig.

Hope this helps, but you might try using the "Search" function of the forum to do some reading up on various exhaust system threads. Believe me, if you look you will find everything you need.
