When are you actually making this trip and what type of vehicle are you using? Roads at the higher elevations can be icy in spots, fully snowpacked, downright dangerous or closed completely. This includes interstate and US highways which can close unexpectedly during bad storms.

Give us an idea of when you're making the trip and folks along the route can chime in with ideas. If you are doing this in the winter, be damned sure that you travel with survival gear (blankets, flashlights, food, etc.). Passes close all the time and the hotels on either side of the pass will fill to capacity quickly.

Red face

Mid May is usually pretty safe, even at higher elevations. You'll see snow on the shoulders and could see actual snow falling, but it's rare. If you're riding, you absolutely will see lots of sand and gravel on the roads.

In and around Denver, I love the Peak to Peak highway that goes between Golden and Estes Park. You can get to this road via US 6 or CO 119 but I prefer route 72 through Wondervue, which turns into the Peak to Peak, or the paved road that runs through Golden Gate Canyon. Lots of nice little roads off of the Peak to Peak too. If they're open, it's always worthwhile to visit the 2 really high elevation roads, Trail Ridge in Rocky Mtn. Park or Mt. Evans road at, you got it, Mt. Evans.

I've driven and ridden extensively through the southwest and my absolute favorite jaw dropping roads are routes 24 and 12 through south central Utah. They run through Capitol Reef Nat'l Park and they're stunning. Also plenty of great roads in the 4 corners area, especially southwestern CO and east central Utah, near Arches.

I'm sure others will chime in but this is a start at least.

If you are going to be near Eastern Arizona during your travels
do not pass up old route 666, The Devils highway.

The highway has been re-named now to RT 191 / Coronada Trail. ..
1100 turns in 100 miles from Alpine to Clifton
with very minimal traffic. You will never in your lifetime
forget about this road.

Be safe!

you'll need more time in California IMHO... what kinda roads do you prefer?.. more towards tight or loose?.. as far as view?.. lots to choose from..

if you plan on not going back the way ya came.. i recommend traveling though Lake Tahoe.. hit Yosemite and Kings Canyon on your way down.. once in SoCal.. there are MANY roads to go see...

the way back? well through the mojave dessert once is ok... Vegas waits for you on the other side.. then you get the Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, and then north to Brice Canyon.. Utah is a nice state for roads, state parks, and views... i've posted some of these in the past, but i love these places.. so hope ya enjoy..
yosemite valley

hwy 180.. kings canyon

hwy 198, sequoias..

grand canyon, north rim

zion canyon, utah
