Hyper Speedo error (9.2%)

Factory tire installed, but there is an error of 9.2% according to the GPS I use to compare the two.

Anyone else out there notice the same?

The first sign of trouble was I get 35 mpg. Second was i dont seem to pass much traffic, though my speedo indicates 95 mph (actual speed 86 mph).

Thirdly, was I went 128 mph on the freeway and I just find that hard to believe I was going that fast without much trouble (naked bike/windy day).

The boys at Del Amo are as useless as they have been on any troubleshooting I have asked of them.

Any knowledge out there on this subject? There was no error in the GPS...

My Zumo 550 is about 8-9kilometres per hour slower than the speedo on the Tard. When the GPS is in the car it shows the same difference. Second set of tires on the bike and same difference as before. I have talked to a few guys on other bikes and they say the same. Speedos are off and GPS is more accurate?

The owner's manual states that the speedo reads 8% higher than actual; so yours is reading only 1.1% higher than specified.

What I don't know, however, is whether the 8% also applies to the odometer as well. If so, then Ducati effectively reduced their warranty claim risks by an equivalent amount.

By the way, GPS velocity is very accurate when running with a clear unobstructed view of the sky. It computes velocity based on the doppler shift in the satellite signal frequency as opposed to change in position per unit time. I would consider GPS velocity as truth.

Read your manual

As well as the publicised 8% add on to the speedo reading, which incidently is added after the ECU has received the correct signal from the sensor on the rear hub assembly, Ducati has also advertised the Hyper as having a 200kph speed limiter programmed into the standard ECU.

Guess what, that is all marketing hype. The truth is, the bike is not capable of doing a genuine 200kph in standard form. My bike has shown 215kph with Zard slip-ons, minus 8% = 198kph.

The thing we should all be grateful for is Ducati hasn't followed oriental trends and taken speed sensor readings from the front sprocket, change your gearing and the speedo is way out.

I saw 230-240 at the creek on the straight. wish I'd taken the GPS with me to track all my laps, that would be cool seeing them all on google earth and all the speeds etc.

Quote From Owners Manual

“Speed” indicator
This function shows vehicle speed.
Speed indication is obtained from actual speed information
(in km/h) from the ECU increased by 8%.
Maximum speed displayed is 299 km/h (186 mph).
Over 299 Km/h (186 mph), the instrument panel will show a
string of dashes " - - - " (not flashing).

My GPS is about 8% less than tne bike speed indicator

I've gone through posted radar signs a few times at various speeds and they have always show the EXACT speed as shown on my display.

Obviously (with intended pun), YMMV!

Same here. At the most, it's a mph or 2 off but usually exact. AFAIK, the optimistic speedo reading applies to all 2-wheelers and most vehicles in general. It seems to be a larger discrepancy with 2 wheelers when measured against GPS, typically up to around 10%.

It's gotten so that every time I see radar signs I make a conscious effort to test my speedos. They're always exact matches, even though I know the speedo on my bike is off. There are correctors that can be purchased but it's all a game anyway, why bother? You're better off investing in a good radar detector.

My thoughts are;

The governments of the world have conspired with the major manufacturers in an attempt to reduce road carnage. Most people tend to drive a little over the posted limit when traffic will allow.

Manufacturers don't mind if their products appear to be faster than they are.

Majority of magazine testers print indicated speeds, not measured.

Face it, we live in a world that operates on Bull Shit and Money!
