Hypermotard vs BMW HP2 Megamoto

having just discovered supermoto, and the fun aspect (the general raison d'etre) of these bikes, is there anyone who has spent saddle time on both these bikes and present a comparison?

BMW's HP2 weighs the same, puts out a lot more horsepower and torque, yet every written review I've seen seems to talk more about how it's a bastion of stability - which seems to leave out the fun factor and the entire point of a supermoto. I'm under the strong impression that despite weighing the same and being significantly down on power and torque, the Hypermotard is a quicker, more flickable, wheelie/stoppie/general street hooligan fun bike that only has wide mirrors as a foible for urban fun riding.

I would add this type of bike to my garage for exactly that reason - fun. Pulling wheelies. Sliding it out and backing it in (on closed tarmac of course), and even some mild off-road action.

btw, can pillion pegs be added to the Hypoermotard?

...just my view....when you are buying something that is as you say "fun"...you don't buy the toy from the manufacturer that embodies "sensible"!

As for pillion pegs....they come as standard. Get one they are great and if you've ever had a sportsbike then your passenger will thank you too!

While I have not ridden a HP2 Megamoto, I did a LOT of research on them and I am a BMW nut. I've owned 7 of them in the past 5 years and two are still in the garage.

The hp2 is not a production bike and they are much more exclusive than the HM. Same weight, but shaft drive. I think it's the perfect play bike for the bmw afficienado as a second or 3rd bike.

Why did I get the Ducati HM S? Well, I've never had a Duc, the price is a heck of a lot less, it looks better and I like the sound. Yeah, I know, I'm shallow.

But if you are tall, have the bucks, don't like chains, the MM would be a great ride. Just don't put panniers on it.

actually, the prices are pretty similar in Korea - Ducatis are hugely overpriced, generally double, where HP2s only see a 50% markup over US pricing.

I looked at the torque figures more closely and I now see that where the HM could be more fun - the torque peak comes in much earlier. Horsepower is probably irrelevant as neither bike is one you want to ride at 100mph due to wind blast.

I'm a committed BMW rider, but in my grand plan, I want to add two Ducatis - a superbike, and something unique, like an MH900E. But I'm beginning to think that an HM might be simply more practical and fun - the Ducati cafe racers (MH900E, Paul Smart, Sport 1000S) look awesome, but are seriously uncomfortable. Whizzing around town on a supermoto, upright and comfy, with tons of torque right there anytime, would probably beat the pants off of sweating and grimacing at the carpal tunnel developing as I ride a cafe racer through town, splitting through traffic jams...

BMW Machinery

BMW makes a fine piece of machinery. They have so many models I have to buy one each week now just to keep up. I throw most away because I just do not like the way they look (plus it's just a bother to re-sell the damn things).

I'm not trying to take anything away from what this bike can do,( like on the Pike of Peak) but it's purpose built at a price for the Jaylenordoro's vs a Hyper-appreciano built for Jay,me, Pikes Peak, and lots more bang for the buck.

Who could throw away a Hyper, it just ain't machinery!

eeap, I read pricing wrong. HP2 Megamoto is $8,000 more than the HM 1100S - $23,000 versus $31,000 (these prices are tax-included and are out-the door complete prices btw). And the HM can be ridden two-up.

In planning for a nice city twin, I was thinking more BMW, like the Low Rider that will come out in 2~3 years. But a Hypermotard is suddenly a lot cooler than I had initially thought, available immediately, plenty cheaper than a Streetfighter, and I never understood the point of superbike-powered naked bikes anyways. Most BMW K1200R owners I know have done big windscreens.

But I'm a sucker for interesting farkles. The bark-buster/turn indicators. Too cool. I'd give up heated grips and the BMW-standard ABS for that.

Which part is wider?

On the BMW, the heads are the wide point & on the Hyper, the bat-wing mirrors. It is much easier to fold the mirrors in than the BMW heads.

Proof - I hit a deer w/ the right head on an R1100S at 60mph. Head didn't fold in at all! Deer did fold in - broken shoulder. BMW 1 Bambi 0.

Don't want to rain on your parade, but both the Hyper or BMW are not remotely supermoto except in styling. While I prefer the Hyper (which I have) because it looks great and you can hooligan it, I wouldn't dare try to back it in the way you can a real supermoto bike. I can back in my SM bike without much fear because even when the rear grabs you can handle it. But on the Hyper if the rear grabs it will be a much bigger highside jolt with all the wieght. Secondly with backing it in your getting the rear wheel light on a 220+ pound bike while mildly dragging the rear brake. Getting the Hyper at 400+ pounds light on the rear you would have to be going faster, and if you get a rear wheel grab at high speed could be very dangerous.

If you want to go supermoto route get a WR450 which may be able to be made street legal in Korea and buy a kit and you will have a bike that utterly kicks ass for street riding. Or get a street legal DRZ 450 (slower and heavier than a WR) and start trying to back it in in parking lots. But if you are going to be doing freeways and using it as a general sport style bike get the Hyper for sure.

thanks for the advice, although I tend to be cautious, you probably just saved me from a vicious highside in the future one week after picking up an HM!

making a bike "street legal" in Korea is pretty easy - you just register it!!! Back home, as we all know, bikes are treated like cars, some states require emissions, etc...but over here, bikes are treated like motorized bicycles - they don't even carry titles. Craziness.

just did more research. Lots of true supermoto choices - which I'm guessing is a 450cc MX bike setup for the road. There are 600cc choices too that weigh in at 300lbs, including a BMW - two actually, if you put 17" street tires on a G450X.

A true supermoto is too narrowly focused though for my needs; I'm primarily a sport rider so I don't need a machine for backing it in a drifting everywhere. I need good city manners, something fun to whip around on the streets, two-up capability...I guess I can pop the occasional wheelie and let the rear end get loose a little every now and then for a thrill

Pikes Peak

Look at the result of this year's Pikes Peak. it was the Hyper that took the win from the Megamotos. So you get bragging rights as well
