A question and warning about gascap key
Alright; so I listened to someone I shouldn't have and let my gascap with tumbler lock, go inside a powdercoat oven...annnnnnnnnnd of course; the little black plastic guard melted thus, rendering the lock unusable.
That's the warning part. Please don't go through what I've endured just to have a black gascap. That; or just take the time and ask for help (thanks Fresno!!! ) of other, more educated individuals here. Thanks to Fres; I figured out how to remove my lock assembly, just a little too late ...
Now to the question part; has anyone here had to totally re-key their bike? Ducati so far thinks that in order to have one key work for the cap and ignition, I'm going to need a new lock set. And with that new lock set; I'm going to have to order a new anti-theft ring AND a new dash assembly. That's over $1000.
Anyone know of something different?
Thanks!
Chris

I would check to see if Vortex or someone else makes a trick cap for it. Even if it doesn't lock I'm sure you can find something that would work without spending a bunch of money and still look good.

have a locksmith who knows their shite, take a look at the damaged gas cap lock. perhaps they can fix it. if they can't, ask them if you get a new lock assembly, if they can make the new lock fit your existing key.

What he said..... Buy a new lock and have a locksmith match it to your key. I would be very surprised if that wasn't possible.

Not sure about your bike model, but what about one of the cool billet non-locking caps? Sex appeal (for us Duc goobers, anyway) & deals with the other problem.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the help!
Well; before I knew about this issue, I bought an NCR cap and had it anodized...
I'm going to see what the local locksmith can do. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks!!!

Where can you get one of those?
I don't really care about locking my gas cap and I'm not thrilled with the stocker.

The billet cap from NCR uses your old lock assembly.
If anyone wants, I can post photos on the removal process. Just let me know or shoot a PM.

I would just weld the hole shut smooth it out and repowder coat the whole thing. I can't remember if it is aluminum or what, but you can find someone to weld it.
You could always tap it with some treads and fill it in with a button head screw or plug.
Having this thing lock is a pain in the ass anyway. I guess if you leave it unattened it might present some problems.
Out!
