HELP from Marzocchi today
OK here's the scoop, for some front end HELP!
Marzocchi DOES have springs for us! stock is (.86) you can get the stiffer (.92) (.96) and a (1.0) but you will have to make a 43mm OD prelaod spacer, I'm hoping a 1 1/2 in. PVC pipe will work as a spacer.
The problem is that the springs for the 50mm fork that Marzocchi has is for a 5 in. travel fork, and we have a 6 in. travel fork, there are NO drop in springs for the 50mm 6 in. travel fork, so we have to make the 5 in. travel springs work, they are shorter, so we have to make longer preload spacers to make them work.
This is what you do, take out your stock spring and preload spacer, measure the overall spring length WITH preload spacer, and then take the new shorter spring and make a longer preload spacer so that the OVERALL length of the new set-up is just about 1/4 in. longer than the stock length. Thats it!
The oil level is between 100mm to 140mm, this is measured with the forks totally compressed, springs out, measured from the top of the fork. The starting point is about 120mm. The higher oil level (100mm) the stiffer the fork will be thru its travel. the lower oil level (140mm) will be softer.
The stock fork oil weight is 7.5WT when you go to the heavier springs go to 10WT or 12WT fork oil.
The cost of the new springs is about $100.00 a pair! GREAT PRICE!
But before you heavier riders order springs, you might want to try the higher
oil level, (100mm) just to be sure, and all it'll cost is the price of the oil!
If you have any tech questions or want to order fork parts or springs, you can call Johner, (EX126) at Marzocchi USA (661) 257-6630
Now you know, Aloha Alex

Are you now a sales rep for Marzocchi?? You should be! Great work, however, I'm a lightweight and like the forks the way they are.
There's another option that our friend Alex has been discussing since I met him, but he won't commit!!!!.....to the shhhhhhhh.... diet.
I love you brother!

Good info. Now, is it going to be worth it to spend the money messing around with the stock forks? Part of me wants to just bite the bullet and get a new cartridge kit and springs from Race Tech.

Interesting Alex, I rang and emailed them but to no avail
Anyway, this brings up the "is Ractech telling the truth" as they quote our spring rate as .66 and are adamant about it.
I have the opposite problem to you where my forks are too harsh for my weight, suggest also if you can obtain a linear spring would be better than progressive.
I have had some 4.5 mm wire liner springs made (5mm factory) and will take the bike out tonight for a skid to see how they go.

wow, .86 is stiff. I put most of my mx bike forks at .44 or.45 (I'm 170lbs). I guess its cause of the 400 lb bike and the potential of having a passenger on board?

Me = 240 normally or 265 with full gear.
Street and race bikes, my fork springs are .95 or 1.0
No MX input here, but the Hyper is a street bike and not an MXer.

BTW- That's a cents sign, as in 100 cents (˘) = 1 US dollar ($), for our foreign friends.

Why go through the trouble of making spacers, etc... there are tons of spring companies whom will make springs for you that are correct and drop-in.
Cannon has made them for the Hyper for European Cycle Services - call Steve at ECS he will help you out.
