Rear Ohlins Question
I am looking at the rear shock, Ohlins dp 36520811a (anyone know the actual Ohlins type number, might be less expensive to buy from an Ohlins dealer,), if you were buying a rear shock for that money, would you buy another model from the Ohilins range, one from say WP or another make, details of your choice appreciated

Google
Call Ohlins, find their number on Google, I did this when I wanted a metal ring to replace the PLASTIC spring insulator for my Ohlins. The tech that answered the call was very knowledgeable, told me that Ducati cheaped out in a number of places when they did their "group buy".
Not only will they tell you the model/variant they will tell you who has the best price.
Cheers,
RS

Penske...
I might have to take a long, hard look at one of these if I didn't already have an Ohlins...
http://www.le-suspension.com/catalog...products_id=35
http://www.traxxion.com/store/detail.asp?product_id=P87
In other words... A Penske "Triple". Penske's offer a couple of interesting design differences that you don't get with an Ohlins. Understand, I love Ohlins shocks (I have them on seven motorcycles right now...), but I have had Penske's in the past and they really are an impressive piece, and either Lindemann Engineering or Traxxion Dynamics will build you one to your exact specifications, and the Penske "Triple" will offer you even more adjustability than the Ohlins.
I've even been thinking of getting one for the Hyper - and with one of the trick titanium springs - not just for what I think is a bit better material quality, closer tolerances, and just a bit more "bling"/uniqueness factor...
There are some other great brands out there, too... WP (White Power, owned by KTM), Elka, YSS, Hyperco, etc. You may want to look around if for no other reason than being just a bit different from everybody else.
Wha'dya give me for my Hyper's Ohlins??? If the price is right I'll try out the Penske and report back here... Just for the good of the board, of course...

Unless you're racing it the triple clicker is a waste of money. Even most racers can't get everything out of it.

Oh, I couldn't agree with you more, Mongo... No 'bout a'doubt it.
Just that they are fun to fiddle and play with, and the trickness factor is off the charts.
Seems like just about everybody's got an Ohlins these days. Hell, I even have one mounted on my Yamaha/Star Stratolounger... Whoops! I mean Stratoliner. Took me months to get it, but it's pretty neat, what with hydraulic preload adjustment and all. But then again, Yamaha owns Ohlins now, so it was no stretch for them to produce aftermarket Ohlins for the 'Lounge Chair...
But again, just my two lire'... yen... guilder... euro... cents... whatever. YMMV.

For "S" owners with Ohlins shock that have the plastic jam nut below
the metal one, you now have 2 options. Option #1 first leave it alone, and if
the shock gives you a problem, IT IS a Ducati problem, because Ducati had
Ohlins make the shock to THEIR specifications, and so it will be covered
by your warrantee, providing your in the bike's warrantee period. Option #2
Ohlins USA, is AWARE of the problem, and they want to help! if you send
them your shock, (you pay for shipping) and $20.76, cost for the aluminum
ring, part #531-01 they will do all the repair labor for free, and send you
back your shock. As a bonus, if you tell Ohlins what model Ducati you have,
your weight, your skill level, they will for $89.99, install the correct spring
rate spring for you, just like a CUSTOM made shock.
West Coast riders, send your shock to Walt Schonauer, (Ohlins sales Rep)
12301 Mills Ave. #25 Chino, CA 91710 Tel. (951) 712-9463
East Coast riders, send the shock to Ohlins USA, Inc. 703-C
Old Spartanburg Rd. Hendersonsville, NC 28792 Tel. (828) 692-4525
So now we ALL know, Alex

Thanks as ever, the forum comes up with some good info,
I am toying with an S upgarde pack from the dealer, Forged Alloy Wheels 96849408B, Adjustable Liknage 96849608B, Carbon belt covers 96430703B Monobloc Brakes 96849568B,Ohlins rear shock 36520811A but it would seem I could get the same Ohlins shock much cheaper from an aftermarket shop, or even a better Ohlins with a remote pre-load, for slightly less money than Ducati wants for the lower spec S46PR1C1, must admit to liking the WP 4014 Spin Model,

+1, I've had a few Penske shocks on my race bikes, great quality, a nice alternative to Ohlins. One was a fancy triple clicker that the previous owner had custom made for an RS250. It was too much for me, but sure looked bad ass on the bike.
