1100S Suspension - Spring Replacement Question

Gents,

I've had my Hyper now for a while and have made the time to set up the spring sag for the front and rear. The Ohlins site says the front rider sag should be set to 35-50mm and the rear rider sag should be set to 25-40mm. You can see this for yourself at : http://www.ohlins.se/Motorcycle/Sett...9/Default.aspx

I"m a big man at 6'4" and 260+ pounds and have achieved 50mm front and 39mm rear rider sag. I did this by increasing the rear preload by four full turns and increasing the front preload by one full turn. I figure the Hyper was meant for a 185 Lb man and sprung accordingly at the factory. I'm told by a local Pro suspension shop (they do all brands/types of bikes) that the Ohlins and Marzocchi springs can be replaced with heavier OEM ones for about $199 CDN for the front and $159 CDN for the rear) and that this will set the sag to 25mm rear and 35mm front.

Does anyone have any experience with changing the springs? If so, what did it do for the bike? Does it ride stiffer? Did it really make a difference? If so, what did you notice in the turns/bumps? I'm sure for an experienced track rider it would be noticeable, but am I really going to see much of a difference for my riding? I enjoy tooling around town and being a general nuisance on the country roads. ( I love this thing - they should have called it the HyperREtard !!)

Thanks in advance!

G

You probably would benefit from stiffer springs given your size. However, don't expect the sag up front to be similar to sportbikes. This thing essentially has a long travel front suspension like a dirt bike and sagging in the low to mid 40s is typical. I try to get the sag set so the bike is relatively level when riding on smooth flat terrain.

There are a lot of threads on suspension setup and tuning, including springs if you do a bit of research on this forum.

Out!

I don't believe there is a replacement spring for the forks yet. Many of us just change out the fluid to lighter fluid to get rid of some of the harshness. Those who have aleady changed the fluid have noticed more fluid than the service manual recommends. Therefore with too much fluid and too high of a viscosity, the forks are too harsh no matter how you fiddle with the adjusters.

The Marzocs don't even permit a compression or rebound shim change because the cartridge is crimped. I plan on changing out the fluid this spring. I guess the only other thing I can do is get replacement cartridges from racetech.

Info on Marzocchi is very sparse at this point, I don't know if they are trying to keep it a secret however none of them have been forthcoming with info to help decide at least what I wanted which is lighter springs.

I am having springs made at present to suit me.

Posted this elsewhere a while back... but Jim Lindemann has heavier springs (.92) and can modify the adjusters to improve fork action. About $215. He can also revalve the Ohlins on the rear.
