Track Bike
I just signed up for the California Superbike school at Thurderbolt race track in NJ. Of course I'm not going until May, it's a little chilly right now
I'm considering a track bike instead of using the Hyper, at least until I'm more comfortable on the track. So far I like the Aprilia RS 125. Anyone have any experience with the RS 125? I don't really care about straight line speed I'm more interested in developing good technique in the corners.
BTW, the Aprilia USA site list the MSRP at $5499, any OTD price range?

one thing to be aware of before jumping into a 2 stroker in maintainace...Im not real familiar with the aprilia 125 but I know the hondas are better machines but require top ends about every 300 miles. I have a honda RS125 and I love 2 stokes but unless your serious about tweeking on your track bike I would look into something else. Prolly an Sv 650 or a new Ninja 250, the little ninja's are hard to come by right now (2008 and up models) but I know you can buy a race ready SV with suspension for well under $4000

for that kind of price i'd be looking at finding a low mileage Aprilia Cup challenge bike (called RS250 outside of America). Not only are they double the size of the new RS125, these have better components and are generally more reliable. The Aprilia RS125 and RS250 are no where near as stressed as the honda RS or yamaha TZs so the maintenance is very reasonable. Having said that they don't put out as much power and are a fair bit heavier. A Aprilia RS250 will do fairly similar lap times as a Honda RS125.

There is a lot to like about 2 stroke race bikes, but why not rent a bike from Code? I think thats only $150 extra.

i would definitely agree w/ mountain on this one. if you rent the bike, you won't have to think about anything but learning. i did that for my first ever track day and it was great. the bike was totally race prepped, i.e. suspension, safety wiring, fuel, tires, engine tuning, etc., etc,. i also paid a small premium for insurance, so i didn't even have to worry about damaging the bike in the event of a get off.
totally great advice!

I have no track day experience. However, I thought the GSXR750 would be a great balance between the 600 and 1000 class bikes. Whatever your choice, I think you could find a used 3-4 year old bike that is in great shape for low $ to dedicate to track days.
Out!

Getting into a 600, 750 or esp a 1000cc track bike is totally different deal as compared to something along the lines of a 125 or 250.
With a small (lightweight) low hp bike you really have to focus on technique and corner speed. When you get on to bikes that are make 100+hp I know I personally tend to focus more on twisting the throttle. Its fun but for learning technique I would stick with an under powered light weight bike.
