Tips - Hyper Chain Adjustment and Clutch Cooling!
Hey guys!
I learned a couple of tricks that I thought I would pass on! First the chain tension. While there are tools available for the job that allow you to hook into the castelated eccentric hub, there is a simpler tool that all of us already have!! Its the rear chain guard!! I loosened the pinch bolts and rotated the chain guard anti-clockwise (while looking at it from the left side) and Le-Voila, the hub moved easily and the chain tensioned up nicely. The torque for the pinch bolts is 63NM.
The second is the clutch cover. After years of owning wet-plate clutches, I was keen to open up the clutch, both to lower clutch temperature (longevity) and listen to that sweet jingle-jangle that a Duke makes! I did this for a Buck and a half!! It was as easy as going to the local Home Depot and buying twenty four 6mm flat washers. I removed all 6 bolts (yes, I know you only have to remove 4, but I was going for the eye-appeal as well) and placed three washers on the bolts between the outer clutch cover and the inner clutch casting/engine side cover. I removed the rubber washer and this then left a nice 3/16" gap between the stock clutch cover and the inner clutch casting. The result is sweet! I have perhaps 50% of the volume that an open cover would give while retaining the stock look of the golf coloured cover. Give it a try - its a cheap way to find out if you like the open clutch sound before laying out the $300-$500 that it will eventually cost us all. Remember, this cost me $1.50 and took ten minutes!!
If anyone else has similar tips for the improvement of the Hyper, please pass them on!
