Aftermarket Bars
I was wondering how to choose aftermarket bars for the Hyper.
What kind of things do I need to look for in an aftermarket handlebar?
OD?
ID?
Bend? <-- I have no idea what the story is with this
Wingspan? <-- I can always cut 'em down, right?
Will the factory bar clamp work with an aftermarket bar or do I have to buy an aftermarket clamp setup as well?
The last time I changed a set of bars on a motorcycle it was an '85 Sabre and I didn't give a rat's ass what worked or what didn't; I just needed bars. I want to go about it the right way this time, and I'm looking for any personal/professional insight to guide me.
Thanks in advance.
PS: This is probably gonna be a MX answer, isn't it?

This is a minefield, I went through this exercise not to long ago and the sweep is also very important.
Make sure there is enough room along the bar top for mirrors ,switchgear etc as most dirt bike bars are shorter in this area.
Very unlikely you will have to change your clamps unless you specifically wanted to, most bars are winder across the clamp area than the factory Tard bars.

I just put a set of Pro-Taper CR Hi-Bends (1 1/8") on my HM. I come from dirt / supermoto bikes, and those are my favorite bend. They have just about the sime rise as stock, but maybe 3/4 of an inch less sweep (at the bar ends). With them cranked all the way forward, it helps me keep my elbows out in my riding position.
There are some fitment issues I ran into with the stock handguards, and brake/clutch lever positioning, though. There is less flat "handle" area on the pro-tapers so the levers mount just at the bend, kind of making the levers a little cock-eyed. Also, the pro tapers are a little thicker where the stock hand-guards mount to the bars. I remedied this by buying a set of acerbis hand guard mounts for their Rally-Pro hand guards.
Other pro-taper bends may fare a little better then my beloved CR-Hi's.

Ditto the crazy guy in the mask.
I'm running the Renthal Fat Bar, which is just like the Pro Taper (which I have on all 3 CRs). If you look at eithers website, they give you a breakdown of the height, width and sweep (how much the bar comes back from the plane of the clamps). I always go with the least sweep (like mask-boy) for the same reasons. The hole in the end of the bar where the handguards mount is smaller on these bars, so if you want to keep the stock setup, you'll have to modify. I threw on gel grips, a mirror mount on the clutch perch (a Monster one will work), a tiny black billet Ness mirror (useless) and some shorty Pazzos (Ti w/blk), and ditched the rest for a super clean look. Between that and the fake radiator shrouds, the Hyper sat parked next to the three Hondas for a month before my wife actually noticed. Good Luck.

Pro-Taper Woods low, cranked forward a lot so that the steering was neutral, if I had them forward they were awesome at low speed and weird at high speed, pull them back and low and it was the opposite, this is in the middle. I wend riding with them a little loose and allen key in my pocket and did it on the road. super stiff, no vibration on the mirror and much better shorter than stock, with short arms getting from lock to lock is much better.

Hey Pedro,
I just bought the Woods-Lo too! What kind of turnsignals are those. How did you mount them? Pics are wortha' a thousand words.

Also check out some of the Rizoma tapered bars. I had these on my monster, after trying Renthals. The have more area for the controls than the dirt bike bars. If you want to go lower or more forward, the S2R1000 bars are about 1" more forward, and 1" lower it looks like (I have one off my old bike to compare).

I believe the ProTaper bend closest to stock is the Henry/Reed bend, which is what I'm currently using.
I too have used CR Hi bend on my CR250s; however, on the HM I didn't like that bend as much. I didn't like the way my wrist bent while sitting on the HM (I almost always rode the CRs standing up).

Thanks for all the info, guys. I like how narrow the Woods-Lo bars are. Since I'm not running hand guards of any type, it looks like I'll be able to get away with a narrower bar. I guess I just have to buy a set or two and try 'em out.
Thanks!
