Tard newbie questions...
Hello All –
I am a hyper newbie, but not new to ducs, my other bike is a 748. I have a couple of questions, If they have been answered, just a pointer to the location is fine.
I’ve put about 150 miles on the bike, I got it with 1000 because it was a demo unit. The first service is done.
I cannot believe how fun the bike is to ride. I am not putting down superbikes, but I equate them to having a hot girlfriend with an STD. You want to wring her out, but you know you shouldn’t… I now know about all the BMW riders I thought were crazy… when I see them passing me in the rain, riding through the snow strip in the middle of the highway… it’s the seating position, that makes the bike more maneuverable in “normal” driving. Last night, I rode home in a downpour, with 20 mph side winds… it didn’t seem to bother me, I was just smiling behind my helmet.
So, on to the questions….
1) What is the butterfly, in the exhaust for?
2) Is there a helmet lock I haven’t found?
3) What is the deal with performance ECUs? Back in the day, Uni used to make maps for all different configurations of exhaust, cams, etc. I only see one “performance ecu” from ducati. Are they tunable? How? Are there maps out there?
4) GP shift… anyone figure out how to do it without new rearsets?
5) Section 8 used to have a really good setup guide for superbikes… what kinda sag are people using for the tard?
Thanks in advance,
Blair
Look for a 748 in the classifieds next spring or make me an offer I can’t refuse.

1. Butterfly is a supposedly primarily for sound
2. There isn't one!
3. Find the link/thread about ECU. There are four different ones, you just have to deal with it. I heard Power Commanders will void the warranty if used with Ducati ECUs.
4. Again, check some of the posts about rearsets, you should find many. The Ducatisti tend to be a creative and productive lot when it comes to bike tweaks.
5. Section 8 has great info. Typically sag is about 1/4 of total travel (on MX bikes at least). Static sag is when you let the bike sag under its own weight after you set the race sag, and should be about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. This is important bexcause if you set race sag, and you have too much or too little static sag, then you have the wrong spring in there. According to Stig at PPS (Ca) the hyper comes well sprung for 175 lb riders. Much heavier and new springs are probably in order. Call Stig, he's really good.
