HP.

This is a fun bike, more power is more fun. If I want long range cruising I can get an ST1300

Range. The HP is sufficient for the roads I like to ride. Yep, I've had it pinned, and have seen how fast it will go. Good enough. If I was worried about that, I'd be on a liter sport bike. This is bike born for goat trails, but the best goat trails often don't have gas stations nearby. Range.

I was originally going to vote with mpg, but then I figured the extra 30 miles would equal between 7 and 9 more mpg for my bikes. With the bikes getting 42-55 mpg, I figured the 15 more HP would be more fun.

If you ride conservatively you can get 30 more miles out of it anyway. What's the difference??

Thumbs up Range...

I'd like both, too... But if I have to choose I'll pick range. I have other bikes that make more power. One of the things that make the Hyper such a great bike is its overall *balance*.

Wasn't it Pierre Terblanche who said - when questioned about the design of the Hypermotard and why he chose the DS two-valve, air-cooled engine - that to him the ideal motorcycle would weigh 100 Kg, make 100 HP, and 100 ft/lbs of torque... And that the Hyper is as close to that as he could put together???

I already have my Hyper making about 8 to 10 HP more than stock, with probably another 5 I can squeeze out of it if need be... And I've reduced the flywheel effect so it revs quicker. Any more power than that and it just starts making the bike harder to ride in more situations. As I mentioned, one of the great things about the Hyper is literally being able to use all its got, or close to it. You can approach its limits without a lot of drama or trepidation. Add another 15 HP and that might not be the case.

Down here where I live, and even more so up in the Hill Country and out in West Texas there are a lot of places where gas stations are further than 90 miles apart. That's one reason I will be carrying fuel bottles with me onboard while riding out in Big Bend later this month.

Another 30 miles of range suddenly opens up a lot of riding areas and roads that are, at best, *iffy* right now on my Hyper.

Just my two cents... YMMV. (no pun intended )

When are you headed to Big Bend?? I might give you some company down there. You know where is a Very good Ducati mechanic right outside of Terligua right? and he really likes 2 valvers.
Dallara hit the nail on the head. I was just in the Hill country a few weeks ago... I too carry a fuel bottle, there was atleast one time that I really though I might have to use it. As far as more power every one wants more but it depend on how it comes. The hyper with a few mods can get close to making 15 extra hp and the ridability doesnt take a hit. I would be afraid that if you went much beyond that the bike would become less ridable.

Heading to Big Bend in a couple of weeks, Kingsnake1650...

Drop me a PM and I'll give you all the details, plus I'd love to hear about the Duc' mechanic outside Terlingua.

Going to be a good group to ride with there. It's a little October get-together we started a few years ago and it would be great to have you along.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...
