stuck in gear, shift level stuck down
I will take it to the dealer asap but in the meantime does anyone know what is going on? It is stuck in gear, the lever is stuck down, and the clutch works.

So by stuck down, you mean it is stuck in 1st gear right? Have you tried rocking the bike backwards and forwards?

Probably happened on a downshift, right?
Do a search ... common problem ... LOTS of info.

Found the thread, thanks. For some reason I always panic first and think I must be the only one with the problem before doing a search.
And yeah, downshifting from 4th to 3rd, shift level stayed down. Luckily I was about 200 yards from my house when it happened.
Think I can simply use the roadside assistance to get it towed to a dealer?

I think so. It may depend on distance...

You have probably broken the spring in the gear box. You can damage the gears if you ride it with metal loose in there.
Did the same thing a year ago.

it happened twice to me so far (700 miles and 2700 miles). You can absolutely use roadside assistance. I did last time. I had the dealer come 2 hours away to get it. I bitched to Ducati NA first. It cost over $1k to fix the first time because they said that there was some damage from the spring. I don't know what the bill came to the second time. You definately should notify ducati NA ( I assume that you are in the USA?) to notify them of the problem and your dissapointment to be sure that they oversee the repair and expedite parts and service at your dealer.
From what I gathered, the shifter lever is over extending on downshifts. The mechanism needs adjustment (the stops as it was explained to me) so it doesn't continue to brake the return spring. The service manager at my dealer explained that Ducati has a new method of repairing the problem that is supposed to prohibit it from happening again. They are not too quick to call it a technical service bulletin (TSB), but that is what it looks like to me.

I wasn't exactly tickled! If the downshifts get sluggish, be prepared. I could tell it was imminent both times it happened.

It has happened to me on my 999 and then on my 1098 - both times fixed under warranty
I suspect it can be due in part to too forceful a gear change. However, when you see the spring it doesn't look much thicker than a paper clip so I am now very careful to click into another gear rather than "stomping" !
