Clutch Assembly

Are there supposed to be two metal clutch plates together (no friction plate between) all the way on the inside?

If so, why?

If not, someone at the factory made an oops.

Had the same when installing slipper clutch on my 848... Thought it was some clever computer engineered calibration of clutch engagement curve. But couldn't make myself put them back in that order, so I restored the god-given alternating order and 2k track miles later have had no problems.
