O2 Sensor Manipulator

Finally tried the O2 manipulator this morning, about 100klm round trip.

Only other mod is Zard Top Gun slip-ons. Air box standard, gearing standard.
O2 manipulator was fitted as received, richest setting, estimate of 13:1 air/fuel ratio.

My Hyper had previously been fairly smooth down low (Downunder Euro version) with low speed running improving with the fitment of the Zards, allowing me to often use one gear higher than normal.

I can tootle around town at less than 3,000rpm in top gear with around 2,750rpm showing at 76kph. Anything less than that would almost be physically or mechanically impossible considering bore/stroke/flywheel mass etc.

It would appear that I have gained a little extra smoothness and the rice bubble overrun (snap, crackle & pop!) has all but dissappeared. Best way to tell would be to ride the same terrain several times adding/removing the 'plug and play' O2 manipulator.

The biggest change to me was the running temperature in traffic, while it still might climb 10 degrees when sitting at the lights, a clean run at a steady pace ahead of the traffic will have the temp dropping again at about 1 degree every 250 metres. Overall temp may have been up to 10 degrees cooler for the begining of summer. Again, adding/removing on back to back runs would tell the truth.

jborders9 reported that some Hypers were having difficulty with this item fitted.

WARNING - There is more than one 4 pin plug on the Hyper.

The plug we use is attached to the lower end of the diagonal frame brace that runs from high right to low left in front of the rear cylinder.

The 4 pin plug and loom under the seat is connected to the fuel pump. There may be more.

Thanks for the report. This sounds promising for Hyper owners.

Manipulator Update

Firstly, an error in my original post, 2,500rpm = 76kph in 6th gear.

Yesterday I left in a hurry without fully warming the bike up, this morning I let it idle longer with the oil temp still reading 'LO'. O2 man set rich or theoretical 13:1 A/F ratio. It eventually got very lumpy and didn't sound good at all, tach still showed 1300rpm but I thought it would soon stall. It'd rev cleanly but idle was rough, lumpy, hunting etc. I checked this several times throughout the day and it appears that above 65*C it idles OK. Possibly requires idle mixture reset. Will also need to check idle from cold with O2 man on other settings.

For my ride I aimed to keep the bike at 4,000rpm or 115kph in top to stay in the 'closed loop' region for testing purposes.

First suprise was only 168klm before reserve, that's a net loss of 2k/l with the Plug & Play O2 manipulator set rich at 13:1.

I later tried stopping every 10klm and let the motor cool for a few minutes and reset the O2 man.

Standard - 5000rpm / 140kph = 97*C
Standard - 4000rpm / 115kph = 94*C
Plug & Play O2 manipulator fitted
14.2:1 - 4000rpm / 115kph = 94*C
13.5:1 - 4000rpm / 115kph = 90*C
13.2:1 - 4000rpm / 115kph = 91*C (some foot hills / curves)
13.0:1 - 4000rpm / 115kph = 90*C

Obviously these results aren't conclusive as wind, terrain, traffic etc can all have an impact, not to mention variations in ambient temperature.

After removing the manipulator the biggest difference by the seat of the pants is that on slight downhill runs, trying to maintain a constant 65kph is very hard as the bike hunts or surges. Going uphill with a little load and more throttle it feels better. With the O2 sensor set between 13.0 and 13.5:1 the downhill surging at this point in time appears to be non-exsistant.

Only problem so far is cold idling.

Corrections

When I adjusted the manipulator I used the 4 corners of the blue square so a more accurate assesment of the above settings would be;

Rich = 13.0:1 and Lean = 14.2:1, the other two corners would represent 13.4:1 (not 13.2) and 13.8:1 (not 13.5).

So far stock and 14.2 are lean enough to keep the bike running hot, but with a little extra fuel, 13.0 upto 13.8 seems to run about 5* Celsius cooler oil temp. (Seat of the Pants experience seems more like 10*C+). That may not seem significant but I'm sure a mechanical engineer would be able to attribute that to a greater change in combustion temperature.

I've spoken with Jason about the crazy idle until its warmed up, he said a tiny tweak (1/8th of a turn) to the air bleed screws should suffice

From Jason, here on this board.
Took about a week to get here.

I will start out at 13.4 and go from there.

Spent the weekend riding with the fatduc installed. I am set a the top left corner, around 13.7. Idle air bleeds opened and additional 1/2 turn. Off idle stumble is gone. Smoother pull from idle to shift point. Motor seems a tad cooler, will see how it does in traffic today. Lost about 8 miles per tank of range.

I think it will be just fine like it is, until I find a deal on an LV cat elimanator and find a way to squeeze in a cheap tps reset to install my slip on ECU.
