Melted my headlight & fairing
Please, someone kick me in the nuts repeatedly.
Working on the bike tonight, trying to figure out what was up with the stalling I keep having. After a battery disconnect, I fired the bike up and let it run for 15 minutes, to give the computer time to figure out all the EFI stuff. After about 10 minutes of being blinded by the headlight shining my face, I tossed my jacket over the front of the bike. When I shut the bike off (5 minutes later) I took the jacket off and noticed it was pretty warm. No damage to the textile jacket, but to my udder amazement, MY HEADLIGHT HAD MELTED. There is a big 1" bubbly spot that is no longer clear. It also melted the tip of the fairing just above the headlight. I've left my jacket on the front of my 900SS and Monster (and other bikes) for longer periods of time than this and never had an issue. Somehow the materials this bike is made of couldn't handle 5 minutes of heat from the light bulb. But my jacket didn't melt. Is my bike made of wax? WTF. Should I have expected that to happen/is that normal? I find it stunning that the headlight lens and fairing would melt but my jacket was fine. I'm gonna print up a sticker and start handing them out at track days: WARNING: Do not block the headlight, your bike will melt.
The second surprise came a few min ago. I literally gasped out loud when I saw the replacement costs of the headlight and fairing. Anybody want to sell me some used parts?
Suggestions? I'm pissed at Ducati that I have to be out troubleshooting this stalling issue, then I find that the headlight material is so cheap it melts if something lays against it for a few minutes. Yet they want $2k to replace it all. What's the chance Ducati would warranty this plastic mess?

that sucks.
shift-tech has all the parts you need on Ebay.
probably no go on the warranty, they'd tell you that you should've brought the moto in for the stalling issue.
as for the stalling, you just need to adjust the air-bleeds.

What exactly were you doing to try and diagnose the stalling? Just letting it run?

Less diagnosing and more hoping. I have read the posts on these forums about drilling holes, replacing ECU/TPS and was hoping this was an easy way to cure my baby of it's ailment. Something to try before I got drastic and started spending money (oops too late). So, I disconnected the battery over night thinking it'd clear it's EFI mappings. Put a fan on it, fired it up, let it run for 15 min, hoping it'd have a 'clean' map. That's how the KTM's work, was hoping the Ducati computer worked the same way. No luck. I'm taking it to the dealer this week, hopefully they can fix it.

Just wondering if what you were doing was a Ducati service procedure or something you dreamed up. Don't a Hypermotard yet, just the cams and ECU kit. Hopefully next month. Can you post pics of the damaged parts?

I kind of did the same thing with my stalling earlier this year. It didn't work for me either. The guys at Martin Eurosports (Now just Eurosports), in Coopersburg, PA, were able to get it to run correctly by just making sure everything was within spec. The only thing that was really out of spec was the throttle body butterflies from what I understand.
Good luck with the headlight issue. It's something I'll definitely keep in mind.
