Loose bolts - Quick change sprocket carrier
Hi guys, just thought i'd give you a heads up on this one. 3,000 kms ago I fitted a quick 520 change sprocket carrier from fastbikesusa.com (motorsportsmachine on ebay) like this one http://www.shop.fastbikesusa.com/cat...c?categoryId=5
I didn't use loctitie on the bolts that hold the sprocket to the carrier as they have a split washer. I checked them a month after fitting them and everything was tight. I went to check them again today and 1 had fallen out and 2 were loose.
I don't want to slag them as i think they are a really good product, but if you have brought one either make sure you loctite the bolts or check them pretty regulary

out of curiosity, what thread pitch are the bolts. For a given tightening torque a finer pitch will hold better.
I understand the carrier is rubber mounted to the hub as per standard sprocket, so my understanding is the bolts on the quick change sprocket would be subject to far greater 'shock loads'.

Spot on Gheezzi, there is no cushioning between the sprocket & the carrier so it would be subject to shock, which wouldn't help none. Though the profile of the carrier is matched to the profile of the sprocket, so alot of the force goes directly to the carrier, not all on the bolts (which is why i think they are a good design). You actually have to push pretty firmly to get the sprocket onto the carrier.
The carrier has female threads so the bolts screw into it. Maybe straight holes with a nyloc nut on rear would of been a bit better? Anyway i think with loctite it will be no problems. I should of put it on in the first place - was just in a rush. Just goes to show, should always take the time to do it right the first time and save time not doing it again.

FWIW, my 520 kit came with spring washers under the allen bolts as well as the flat washers. Instructions said to use lock tite as well.
I had a different kind of problem. My carrier rubbed against the chain guard backing plate because there is some play in the 'cush'.

Yeah, mine have split (spring) washer fitted. Didn't come with instructions, though I normally fit loctite to sprocket and rotor bolts. Mate with a brand new 08 Husky 510 had a bolt come out of his sprocket and chewed out his swingarm a few months ago after only 400kms - no loctite from the factory.

Thanks, and hope no other damage was done. I plan to get one of those this winter. I'm thinking safety wire, or possibly using studs (with red loctite) in the carrier and nyloc flange nuts, if there is enough clearance.

No worries, no damage done. They are a good product and i recommend them, it was a lazy installation on my part, not a faulty or poor quality product. Loctite and regular inspection and you'll be a happy camper.

Looks like a very nice piece. I didn't realize I needed one, but now I do. See what you have done? Thanks a lot.
In any case, I always use Red Loctite on sprocket bolts. Even with cush drive hubs, the loads are tremendous, especially on pavement. Safety wire is probably a good idea. The stock studs come ready to wire.
