Bought it on Satuday - Mod it on Monday
Okay, so I bought my Hyper on Saturday and I'm already ready to get some more juice.
I'm happy with the gearing for now, but I've heard that a lot can be gained from an airbox mod. I have read rave reviews about the TPO Beast/R, but I also remember reading about someone using a big f-in hole saw. What will I need to do with my ECU or TPS if I do an airbox mod? I get the feeling that no matter what I mod I will need some sort of ECU or Power Commander. Is that really the case?
I know that I'll need an ECU or PCIII when I do the exhaust, but can I get away without one for the airbox? Or am I stuck with only 2nd gear wheelies and clutching it up in 3rd?
Also, I will be adding a Nichols flywheel once I can exchange the one that I purchased for my now-defunct 916. That should make for a positive change, too.
So I guess the question is: Is the ECU the first thing I should buy?

I would say it depends on how quick you may consider a PC. The flywheel and a 520 conversion feels like 15hp

If you open your airbox and go to a less restrictive exhaust, you should adjust your fueling. You have several options, a DP ECU is certainly one option. You can get a DP ECU then add a race PCIII later or a Rapidbike 3 module to fine tune your fuel map after you do additional mods. Not sure how well the street legal PCIII works since it retains the O2 sensor and closed loop operation of the stock ECU.
Keep in mind that after you install a DP ECU, you will still need to reset your TPS, adjust the fuel trim and air bleed screws.

easiest and cheapest mod to gain 4 to 5 hp: cut the hole in the airbox lid and install either a bmc or k&n air filter.
no need to even adjust the tps with this mod ... just cut the hole (see other thread here) in top of airbox (no need to cut the hole in the airbox bottom), drop in the new air filter, and you have a much happier / easier breathing 1100 motor, and between 4 and 5 hp gain.
suggestion: do each mod one at a time, so you can evaluate the performance increase/decrease. if you are going to get dyno runs each time, get a baseline now, before you do anything ... and keep going back to the same dyno each successive run. otherwise, use your seat o' pants dyno after each mod, to evaluate.
a presto,
johnc

Dukepilot - So the Hyper is closed loop? That means that I have to retain the O2 sensor no matter what exhaust I choose, otherwise I need an emulator or some such thing, right? BTW, it was your review of the Beast R that got me thinking about the positive gains to be had ... did you have to modify your airbox at all? Also, where did you purchase it from and do I need to do something with the case breather?

Yes, the stock ECU is partial closed loop while the DP ECUs are all open loop. With the Beast R, you modify the airbox by getting rid of it, the whole thing except for the airtubes between the throttle bodies and the box. TPO parts sells a K&N breather filter. You should also get a small breather filter for the idle circuit/stepper motor too. You will also need to relocate your coils, which are mounted to the airbox. I simply zip tied them to the frame with some rubber insulation. No problems so far. The Beast R is available from www.tpoparts.com

I did the open airbox on my monster and it made quite a difference, just dont go ride in the rain. I have an extra DP ECU in my garage if you want to buy it I will sell for $350.
