Front LED Signals

Okay, I have studied this and still have no answer thus I turn to the guru's on this site. I am no electrical whiz and this is my first experience with the LED's.

I replaced the stock front turn signals with Oberon LED bar ends.
Flash rate is erratic and rapid with the Oberon's, I placed the stock LED signals on and the flash rate was smooth and steady.

Stock= 15 LEDs per side.......Oberon 16 LEDs per side

With the Oberon's connected and the power on I can unplug one signal side and the opposite changes to a nice smooth steady rate, with the power on and reconnecting the side I unplgged=== both sides then flash properly when selected. Power off and this routine made no difference.

Once reset I turn the power off then on again and the problem manifests once again...irratic rapid flashing.

This seems to be the Inst. panel reading the Oberon's incorrectly. I checked the panel and "Bulb" is selected. Just for kicks I changed it to "LED". The front signals worked correctly but there was no back signals working so I reset it to Bulb.

There is no flasher relay on the HYM. it's all controlled by the Inst. Panel.

For some reason there is an anomally with the Oberons such that the Inst. panel is not properly recognizing them.

Phil ,at PakBikes, is willing to replace them but I wanted to sort this out first, what could the difference be between the Oberon's and the stock such that the Inst. panel is not recognizing the Oberon's?

I checked the Oberon's for continuity and there was no short, I removed them from the bars and there was no change from how they functioned.

Based on the Inst. Panel correctly reading the stock LED's and not the Oberon's I can only conclude that there is something amiss with the Oberons.

you probably need some resistors for the front Oberan LED's.

That's what I am thinking, another HYM owner has the Oberon's and they are working fine without the resistors so what gives?

Well we can lay this thread to rest.

Another member noted that his Oberon's flashed normally when the engine was running so off to the garage and sure enough, they flash properly with the engine running.

Now I am wondering how this can be? I suspect it has to do with the CAN system.

maybe the different between voltages. motor off is ~12.4V. motor running is ~13.7V

I got a note from Phil who got some info from Oberon on the flash rate and LED signals so I thought I would post it here for others to see, might help someone down the road to understand whats happening.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information. This is exactly what my customer is experiencing.

I don't believe Oberon can get around unless you were to match the current draw of the stock LED turn signal AND that would not be practical.

However Ducati has the Hyper Motard flasher circuit designed it is just too sensitive to a specific window of current draw and depending on the condition of the battery when its not being charged by the alternator (engine running) one can expect this to happen. As batteries "age" their terminal voltage will continue to drop, meaning this issue will only get worse but with the battery being charged by the alternator (engine running) there should not be a problem.

Thanks again,
Phil

Thanks for the update Phil. I have encountered this once before with a UK customer... a strange series of events lead to irregular flash rates until I asked the customer if he had the bike actually ‘running’. When he did try it everything worked ok – I had a meeting on this and it would seem bikes just struggle with the wattage on battery power alone and it’s something we just can’t get around at this time. We’re suspecting it just could be certain bikes have electrical systems that drain quicker than others – I hope this makes sense.

My Hype'S is 4 weeks old, I am new in this forum but fixed a common problem with the LED turn signals.

It is all about power consumption, if
- the blink frequency is wrong or
- the green indicator light in your dash board is not working.

Checkout my webpage:

Then follow: Tech > HYM LED Turn Signal
