Hypermotard S or not

Well, for the longest time I've been considering whether or not to purchase an 848. As the saga continues, I've found myself becoming more and more fond of my CRF250X (trailbike). The thought of turning it into a SM hasn't crossed my mind until recently when a hypermotard pulled up next to me at the light. After 'building' a supermoto package for my CRF, I came to the conclusion that it'd probably be ideal for me to just get a 'tard. So, I took a trip out to a dealership and completely fell in love with the damn thing. Everything about it is awesome! The looks, the performance; the entire package! Anyhow, I'm going to bite the bullet and buy one this week but don't know if going the extra mile and paying more for the 'S' than the regular version. I plan on riding mainly on the street with the occasional trek up to the twisties in the foothills. Is the extra 3k worth it?

do you want/need the carbon fiber, monobloc brake, upgraded (adjustable rear) suspension & lighter wheels or a color other than red?

i didn't, so that's why i went with the standard model. i spent some $ on an exhaust, comfort seat & Pazzo's (which i wold do even if i got the S)

i had a S while mine was in the shop. for my riding, i didn't really notice the differnce. i'm sure if you track it you might be able to tell.

i was looking at the 1098, but it's wasn't for me. while it would put a smile on my face, its still a sportbike that i'd probably never come close to using at its full potential. the Hyper put a permagrin on my face. if i were to do it again i wouldn't change a thing.

go HM-S

go for the extra goodies unless you have a fixed budget that is close to the standard. i think $3k for the extra items is a good deal...

for what you get it's a good deal, if you want the parts. it'll cost more than $3k to get the forged wheels, CF, ohlins & monobloc's to add to the S.

alounacara, didn't you know that the "S" designation add's 50hp LOL

I don't think the extra parts are needed. The standard model works great. The tires are the only thing that I feel to be inferior, but are not a dealbreaker. The suspension on the standard works great and so do the brakes. Just because it says ohlins, doesn't mean that it is ideal for all situations. An example of this is the latest Sport Rider comparo of a ducati 1098R vs. a CBR1000rr. The RR actually achieved higher ratings in the suspension department because of the especially stiff ohlins setup on the R.

I've heard that the brakes are very touchy on the S and can get you in trouble with overbreaking. The same was noticed in the Sport Rider comparo. I really do like the feel and progressive stopping rate of the standard brakes. They are radial mount brembos after all with huge rotors on a 400 lb. bike.

I struggled with the same dilemna as you. I am confident in my decision to stick with the standard and chose the upgrades that I wanted. I have almost the difference between the two models invested in my standard.

Agree on the S and it's the way I went. I figured I'm already spending a lot of money, why not get more good bits with the S.

Noticable?

Good afternoon gents

So for those with the S is the low stiction forks do you notice a lot more feedback?

And the Ohlins, better progression and spring rates?

Interested to know, many thanks.
