Carrying spare gas...
I'm planning on doing some day trips out west around Midway, UT in late August... not counting on coming across too many Exxons or Shells along the way. Have any of you brought along spare gas, and if so, what'd you use to carry it in? Primus containers?... Or just a small gallon or so in a spill proof plastic gas container? Looking for suggestions.
Thanks,
b

If you are heading through Wyoming and Utah, you will at least see a lot of Sinclairs and a few Flying Js. Anyway, if you don't like fueling up there, I would carry a couple of MSR fuel bottles with the o-ring seals. They are lightweight and made for backpacking. If you really want to go lean and mean, then buy a fluid/fuel siphon with a piece of hose at the auto parts store for under $10. Anybody willing to stop and help is your new favorite filling station and it won't matter if they frequent Chevron or Shell.
Out!

I was thinking about something like the Kolpin.

1.5 gal would be a nice spare supply, though I'm not sure how they would do laying flat. Maybe it could be attached to a seat bag in an upright position?

I've used the MSR bottles and they work. One issue, however, is how to fill them up at the gas station. The gas pump nozzle is too big to fit in the hole and you can't use a funnel directly since the gas from the nozzle comes out too fast. This means you first pump gas into some other container and then pour it into the MSR.
Alternately, you get buddies who ride GS1200s and they become your fuel tankers.

Some great options here. As always thanks for the knowledge you guys.
Especially, BillyD... I would have totally spaced the difference in nozzle/opening issue with the MSR's... so far I think the collapsable box dealy might be the best solution... now to figure out where/how to mount the damn thing.... Rox straps anyone?
Regards,
b

About 8' of small dia. hose that fits below the tool roll. I siphon fuel into the MSR botttle to fill. Haven't needed it yet with stock fuel milage.

I think I would go with the MSR bottles.... it seems like the collapsable box would be a little akward to carry along, not to mention Im not sure I would trust it as much. Why is that Gas can from KoplinPS so expensive??? it looks just like the ones that wal-mart sells for 5buck?
