Question Racing Cams in, backfires and petrol smells

Hey guys,

Just had the DP Racing Cams and Zard Exhaust installed.

The Ducati workshop here in Singapore is rudimentary at best (I am refraining from using my usual collection of four letter words to describe them...). Before you ask, no, the don't have a dyno, nope, the didn't degree the cams...

Since the Cams and Exhaust went in, I'm having a ball... the response and acceleration is thrilling - and I don't care if the neighbors think it is too loud

However, I've had numerous backfires when decelerating, and I can smell petrol when i am riding...

I don't know anyone else who has done a similar mod to their ducati over here, so I am wondering if this is to be expected or if I need to go back to the workshop and have them look at this again.

Any comments?

Regards,
Sean

What ECU are you using? I assume the ones that came with the cams? Is it the zard full system or slip-ons. I have the cams, cam ECU and full termi system fitted. I noticed since fitting everything my leathers smell more of fuel, but i can't smell it while i'm rididng. It doesn't backfire though.

I have the Racing Cam ECU installed...
It doesn't backfire all the time... but often enough that I don't duck everytime I hear it anymore... I had the wife-unit on the back and she was complaining of the smell of petrol - I only noticed it after she complained... The bike tends to smell of it after a ride.
As I said, I'm not even sure it is a problem, or if I should have expected it.. it's a little more thirsty than before, but heck, it's running a lot harder too.

Is it spillage from doing more wheelies?

If the fuel tank was removed for installation of cams etc, then it could be that something was not reconnected properly.

Alex, you've had experience with all this, care to chime in?

Is the exhaust properly sealed at the connections?

Get in there with a lighter to check all the dark spots, that should work.

I've not done any of that stuff but mine does smell a little in the garage after i leave it for a bit. sounds like they have the fuel cranked up tho, would explain the smell and the backfire on gas off, my SP2 used to do it all the time.. actually thinking about it the backfires could be due to air getting in the system and igniting the unused fuel, (thats what caused the honda to pop with the PAIR system) when my header vibrated off it banged heaps more. I'd say check all the joints for leaks etc..

A lighter eh? Nice one...

Good suggestions - perhaps it is a loose clamp somewhere - I'll take a look when I get back on the weekend.

I gotta get me some of that!

Ps. Try a different brand of condom, or a smaller size!

mine backfires a little bit, not much though (termis 2-1 and dp cams)

i had this massive backfiring problem on my s4r due to an exhaust that was not properly sealed.
