Aprilia to launch 1200cc Dorsoduro and Shiver
from hell for leather magazine:
A factory insider has confirmed the imminent release of both the SMV1200 Dorsoduro supermoto and SL1200 Shiver naked motorcycles. It’s not known in which bike Aprilia’s new 1200cc v-twin will first appear, especially since the company's next range-topping superbike, the RSV 4, will feature a new 1000cc, 200bhp V4. Regardless, at least one bike featuring Aprilia’s new v-twin will go on sale next year.
The larger engine (both currently use a 750cc v-twin), first seen in the FV1200 concept bike, is good news for the Dorsoduro, which has come under some criticism for its weight and lack of engine capacity. At 186kg dry, the Aprilia is 10kg heavier than its nearest rival, the Ducati Hypermotard, while carrying a 350cc smaller engine. With 1200cc, the new engine goes some way to addressing that gap, at least with power if not lightness.

Yeah, I'd love a Shiver 1200 except it would be in the shop all the time. Their bikes are awesome but the reliability is shite
It'd be water cooled and the dyno charts I saw of that 1200 motor are about 125 - 130 I reckon. The Shiver puts out 95 at the crank

If you want a nakid bike then the KTM superduke is the way to go followed by the Triumph S3. They are great machines with reliability to boot.
On another note so many of the nakid bikes now look similar or are variations of others. Triumph has been making the S3 for a while now and everything seems to be a deviation of it to some degree. I know some will not agree but if you really look at them side by side I think you do see it to some degree. Thats why I love the Hyper it stands out in a crowd and really has no rival. Of course its a love it or hate it look but I love it......

The reliability of the rotax powered RSVRs is excellent. I would even say better than the Ducati 4V engines, based on my experience with a 748. However, as most are aware the contract with Rotax is just about over. The 450/550 range was the first engine Aprilia/Piaggo designed and built in-house. Everyone seems to have an opinion on how unreliable they were, but as an owner i would say half of it is true the other half are chinese whispers. I haven't ridden a shiver 750 but have seen the engine and it is alot more robust and simplier than the 450/550 design. Looks alot heavier too. I would say that by the time the 1200 gets out Aprilia will have sorted alot of the bugs out with the Piaggo engines. If not then the company will pretty much head down the tube. I don't think they are a direct competitor to the hyper though. They are just a replacement for the Tuono.

I agree with you for the most part but IMO, NOTHING looks or sounds anything like my Brutale with performance to match. Granted the S3 is a few grand cheaper but the KTM isn`t. My Hyper gets a little more attention then the Brute mainly because it looks like a big, fast, Italian dirt bike...

What exactly do you base this on? In my experience, which only includes running a an authorized Aprilia dealer, the bikes were very reliable, and that was when Aprilia just started importing big bikes in 2000. I doubt they're any worse today than they were then.
Also, are you reading the same Ducati.ms forum that everyone else is? What makes you think Ducati's are the last word in reliability? Half the posts here are complaints of bad fuel mapping, bad ECU's, flaking paint on engine casings, shitty dealer service, accessories that don't fit, warranty issues...on and on...
I've loved all the Ducati's I've owned, but crapping on other brands about their reliability has to be the ultimate example of the pot calling the kettle black.

Frique,
I'll give you the Brutale comment, they are a sweet looking bike. I actually like the Triumph, KTM and the Aprilla too. My point is that many of the nakids just seem to be slight deviations in the looks department but I guess that can be said of sportbikes and many Harley's or crusiers too. Only so much can be done with two wheels I guess. Thats what makes the HM so unique its kind of in its own class as far as appearence goes. Aprilla has attempted to steal that a little with there new twin supermoto bike I guess and maybe others will follow suit. Terblanche definetely has an eye for different and unique designs when you look at the HM, 999 series and the Multi. I'm glad he went to work for Ducati cuz he produced some beautiful machines even if everyone doesn't agree.
P.S. 1000 woohoo...........

Went by the dealer to pick up a part and saw these. Decent bikes, but look "cheap" next to the Tuonos.
