Code Card - MIA What's the Impact
Have any of you experienced an immobilizer error where you needed the electronic code on the card but did not have it?
What where/are the ramifications? Any work arounds?
My used HM did not come with the e-code (the card) but I do have the physical key code. The prior owner is looking for the card.

Well this is waht was explained to me, the inmobilize works with the code on the card, the key code is just if you want a replacement key... if your imobilizer for any reason gets engaged, which will not allow you to start the bike, the only way to turn it off is with the code....

If you don't have that code you will not be able to start the bike. I had this issue on the 1098 I sold and had to use it until I figured out how to reprogram the keys. I would say it is a very important piece of information. The physical key code as stated above is if you need to order replacements and will do you no good if you have an issue with the bike computer forgetting its keys. Have the seller find it for you and if he can't then I would get in touch with a dealer and see if they have the information saved anywhere.

Does the code link to the ECU or just to the front computer?

It is just for the computer/dash. Each key has a micro chip in it that tells the dash its o.k. to start the bike. If for some reason your computer/dash gets wiped you need the electronic code to enter into the computer to tell it that it is o.k. to start and then reprogram the key(s). As stated in previous posts you cannot have both keys near the computer at the same time or it confuses it. IMHO having the electronic and mechanical code are important so make sure you don't lose the card or you can get the codes. It is recommended that you write the code down on something that you carry with you just in case you are out on a ride and the computer forgets the key that way you can at least get the bike started.
