Did anyone see "Superbikes" on speed the other night?
The host was trying to ride a mile long wheelie on the hyper and after about 1/4 mile a huge puff of smoke came out the back and when he set it down, oil was coming out of the bike. They seemed to think he had done some damage to it. I am no wheelie king (yet) and cant ride 1/4 mile wheelies (just have to grow some balls I guess), just curious what could have happened. I figured as many guys on here that talk about wheelying (sp?) so much, I was wondering why noone else said something about doing damage to their bike.

That was Phelwid's bike. Here's the thread where he mentioned the reason:
Long wheelies harmful?

yep that was my ride. The bike was totally fine, i was just giving him sh*t. When the bike is in the 12:00 position for too long, oil will get sucked from the rear crankcase breather up into the airbox... when it comes back down the oil leaves the airbox from the drain tube....in this case it hit the exhaust and poof! I guess you can fix it by doing some re-routing of hoses, but i'm not going to worry about it since my bike will never do a wheelie like that again!

Cool. I couldnt tell if you were messing with him or not. now if I could only say i had that problem from wheelying too long, I would probably have a shit eating grin on my face. Maybe one of these days I'll figure the whole 1 wheel thing out.

So are we talking it only happens at full 12 o'clock or is it more like 10 or 11 too. I guess I will have to pull mine and see. I have not seen any signs of oil on the ground and the bike runs well, so I don't think the air box or filter is getting messed up.
I ride wheelies all the time including some up to 1/2 mile long. I don't seem to be getting any oil consumption either. Time will tell.................hopefully not a bad story.
Out!

Dont laugh, but while we are on the subject, how would you suggest I start trying wheelies on the HM? Standup or sit down? Clutch 2nd? I figured standup might not be as intimidating when the front end comes up since I am not used to it. I have a feeling you either get it or you dont once it comes to doing them. I think once I get the initial feeling of fear with the front end up over with I will end up doing nothing but wheelies. :-)

I personally don't like to stand up, it seems unnatural and it changes the whole dynamics of the bike. Anyway, if you are just learning I recommend going to a school like Up on One Wheel, if that ain't possible then I recommend starting on a smaller dirt bike on a nice flat grassy area, if that ain't possible I would just to some very short and not tall power wheelies in second gear on the Hyper.
Basically, if you roll on the throttle the front wheel will come up a little. Practice until you get a feel for balance and power delivery before you go big. Cover the rear brake with your foot and engage the rear brake if you get up too high or fast and you will come down quick (your balls won't like it, but your big head will). Don't try it in 1st as the power is abrupt and not as controllable.
Out!

I saw that too, I am so sorry, but the bike should be ok. Now I hope you guys got some nice photos or videos out of it, I was searching for them, where are they?
