Question First oil change delema, what to do...??

OK, like the idiot that I am, I scheduled my first 600 mile oil change to late. I waited to long to do it and now it will be done in 2 weeks from now, and I have 758 miles on it already. My dealer said to have it done between 600 and 850(I think) miles. Now, if there is no rain on the next 2 weekends I'll ride about 200 miles per weekend average, so this will take me up to over 1,000 without the oil change.

This being said, I'm thinking of changing the oil and filter myself, so the next two weeks I can ride with no worries of long term harm. I guess I should go to my dealer and buy the same oil they will use, and a filter, and change it myself for now. I'll also keep the scheduled service in two weeks from now so they can do it again.

What would you do?

I wouldn't worry about it. Call your dealer n' tell them the same thing n' i'd almost bet the farm they'll tell ya not to worry.

Or just change it and get better sleep at nite!

Do they just change the oil for the first service? I picked up my bike today and they said the first service would take three hours. Looking at the owners manual it seems to say the only thing required was an oil change, dealership said a ton of other stuff needed to be done.

Oil change cannot be too difficult on this bike. Already did 150 miles today, so the bike will probably have the 600 miles by early next week.

Nothing really to worry about.
It does depend on the dealer and how anal they might be regarding the 600.
It actually really is a glorified oil change. The "bunch of other stuff" usually means the dealer catching the F-Ups from dealer prepping the bike out of the box...
loose bolts re-Torque, chain tension, lines and hoses etc etc
Most of this stuff can be done by the owner if they know their way around a bike. If not let them do it.
Also...
I have seen dealer demo bikes get the 600 at 1000 or more.

If you simply drop the oil and refill without changing the filter and cleaning the mesh it would be fine but with the cost of oil being high it might just be a waste.

some dealers will threaten voiding of the warranty if you do your own oil change or putting on after market exhausts by yourself but this is a rare thing to happen. You will need to feel out the situation with the service manager and the Head tech. My dealer is cool and they are realatively easy to deal with

First get a Manual for your model on CD
If you do do the 600 oil change your self document it with receipts and write-or type out the date the miles and what was done on the bike.
It is a good idea to print out the Routine maintenance table and put all the info on it and check off as you do the maintenance.
File this away with your bike records.
A well documented bike with maintenance records will help you down the road with warranty issues, dealers and for resale.
I've attached a image sample from the 6KMaint. This is the Ducati Manuals Maint. Chart for my bike.

Sorry to be so long winded but I like to cover the bases when it comes to Shizzle like this.

Good luck
JC

Yeah, I would think they do more than just the oil change. Maybe a once over, but my concern is the break-in oil being in to long. I just don't want more than "normal" wear in the engine. I don't want to be asking for premature problems down the road. I also want them to do the recall (minor) items too. Like I said. OIL is my concern here...

I was in the same situation as you. Similar miles, similar wait for service. I was planning on getting a K and N oil filter from ebay and using some repsol that I have lying around for my track bike.

But, then the shifter stuck in 3rd gear and I have to take it to them anyway. Looks like I am bikeless for a while.
