Does the limited range affect your love of the Motard?

I know the range of the Hypermotard has been discussed a lot. However I am going to get either a Motard S or a 999R this summer. I ride a ST-3S with a five and a half gallon tank. So I can go 250+ miles on a tank full. Do you Motard owners notice the need to fuel up often? Is it a bother or not? Do you ride w/other sportbikes, are you the one needing to fuel up first? If you changed exhaust how much different is the mileage from the stock exhaust to the aftermarket exhaust? Did you change the chip also.

Thank you for your input. I'm still in the collecting data stage.

Do you like the ST-3? I'm looking at one for a lap around Australia later this year... only 9000 miles...

"Do you Motard owners notice the need to fuel up often?" Yes.

"Is it a bother or not?" No.

"Do you ride w/other sportbikes, are you the one needing to fuel up first?" No, but I'm sure I would.

"If you changed exhaust how much different is the mileage from the stock exhaust to the aftermarket exhaust?" I have no experience with the stock system.

"Did you change the chip also." Yes.

It doesn't bother me at all. But let me qualify that...

See, I ride motorcycles for fun. Now, "fun" for me consists of things like ripping up the race track, strafing down some twisty roads, or just knifing through traffic.

I like cornering, I like accelerating, and I like hard braking.

What I don't like is droning down the freeway, or riding in rain and snow, or trying to see how far we can ride in one stretch before someone caves in and stops.

This is why I ride bikes like the Hypermotard instead of ST3s. The Hyper is good for everything I love, and it's not so good for the things I hate. Two hundred miles in one sitting? Forget that. I won't even do that in my car! After a couple of hours sitting in one spot, I've gotta get up and move around a bit.

So I'm never going to be one of those guys who brag about putting 30,000 miles a year on their bikes. As far as I'm concerned, 90% of those miles are in crappy weather and/or cruising in a straight line. Blecch.

So yeah, the Hyper's 80-100 miles between fill-ups is plenty enough for me!

Well, all the more reason to take a break on the way out there!

The fuel range does not bother me. Mine is all stock and I've been getting 48 mpg. I can go over 100 miles before the low fuel light even comes on, and I'm ready for a break by then anyway. If I'm headed out for a long ride I top off on the way out of town.

That said, I'm probably a lot easier on the throttle than your typical Hyper owner. My bike currently has 2000 miles and I have plenty of life left on the original rear tire. YMMV, both for tires and for fuel!

How come I can only get 70 miles on mine? All I have is a Termi slip-on.

My mpg & tire wear numbers match Debby's. I also have to echo the easy on the throttle comment - heck - I even have about 1/4 - 1/2 an inch of rear tire that has never touched the pavement. That said, I love the bike and enjoy riding it and that's all that matters to me!
