How's your Hyper after a thousand miles?
In the market for a new bike, sat on a Hyper yesterday at the dealership--way different. I have obviously not test driven the bike, but got both excited and nervous about how upright and on the tank I felt. I can tell the bike would be a blast around town.
I really have two questions. After the initial cool factor, how do you like your Hyper after owning it for a while? What are you impressions, specifically anything that surprised you about the bike after you got to know it?
Second, how is it on a 200 or 300 mile day trip? Or is it simply not the bike for that?
Thanks. jim

My 1977 mile Hypermotard has currently been in the shop for a full week waiting for a friggin part from Italy. The ECU apparently went bad on my completely stock bike. The bad ECU may have been the cause of a stalling issue I had. I'm waiting until the shop installs the ECU to be sure that's really what the problem was.
I love my Hyper more than any bike I've owned in the past 22 years but my recent dealings with a few dealers in the NJ/PA area are making me have second thoughts about this purchase.
I knew when I bought a Ducati that it was going to be nothing like buying a Honda. I expected quirks, glitches and annoyances that I'd never experienced with my 6 Hondas and one Suzuki. The thing I didn't expect was the awful service/dealer network. I'll go into more details once I get my bike back.
Other than that, the stock seat is a little uncomfortable for long rides and the size of the fuel tank can be a little limiting in really long rides. There's also no windscreen so high speed runs can be a little tiring. If you can deal with that, it's really an awesome machine.

To counter the second post, mine has been just fine. No issues with things going wrong with it in the 2000 miles I have on it. Its been into the shop for what I thought was 2 warranty issues but the dealer knew of 2 others and they got them all covered for me without me having to mention anything in one 45 minute appointment. The issues were: trip odometer fix, license plate fix, turn signal wire cover and I can't remember the 4th. My dealer is Modesto Ducati, GREAT folks.
I love the bike it. I found the seat only seems to move me forward if wearing jeans or similar pants. In my RevIt riding pants or my leathers I have NO issues at all with the seat. It a LOT of fun to ride and has gotten me out on a bike a lot more that I had been. The other nice thing is that in all the time I've had it I've only seen one other one on the road.
The only thing I'd like is a larger tank (I fill up at 100 miles with 2.5 gallons) and a bit more wind protection for when on the freeway.

2900 miles, still provides a rise in my pants when i ride it. most fun bike ever owned. makes you want to do bad things when riding, as it really brings out the inner hooligan in you.
200-300 mile days ... depends on the roads. if almost all twisties, then fine. if almost all slab freeway, then not-so-fine stock, but perhaps ok with DP windscreen installed.
the DP tank bags (top and sides) are very cool, and provide good amount of storage for longer trips.
fuel range i have observed is between 75 and 91 miles before low fuel light comes on ... so i am guessing you can squeeze off a 110 mile range if you ride conservatively (which is very difficult on this bike ... see first comment above).
imho, no one bike is perfect for all uses ... if you want to have a lot of fun riding in twisties and on roads that are not pool table smooth, then this is a great bike to own.
ciao,
johnc

At 1600 miles, I can echo this statement. Great bike, tons of fun, I have worked with two local dealers for purchase and maintenance and both have been very good, a I have done 350 miles and it was OK but it will wear on you when trying to run above 85 mph for long stretches, add a DP comfort seat and you are in business. Parts are spendy, but wheeeeeeeeeeelies are fuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnn!
Out!

1/2 Superbike + 1/2 Sumo= Ducati Hypermotard
It is a very unique bike and unlike any other class available really. It is a great urban assault ride, comfortable seating position, high ride height for good visibility, has torque like a freight train and just an overall great ride. Its also a very good canyon killer. As for 200-300 mile days I would say no problem as long as you are not running the superslab the entire time, but then what bike really is fun doing that. If you need something for lots of high speed sweepers or top end then this is most likely not what you are looking for. As for some of the negative comments on dealerships, that is really a hit and miss subject. It all depends on your dealer and you can get a crappy dealer for any brand just check them out. Goodluck deciding and I would say go ride it and make your decision from there.

if anyone has done their own oil changes in between the recommended service, my buddy did his after about 4000 miles after the first service and noticed some good sized metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug.
they werent massive but enough to pucker your butt
just wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing. As I am buying a hyper this week.

At just under 1K miles, I'm really enjoying the bike! Yesterday, I rode the HM and my R1 back to back. They're both really fun but in their own way. I also changed my own oil at the first service interval. I hit the jackpot with plenty of metal shavings on the drain plug, silicone sealant in the oil and an extra valve keeper!

The most fun on 2 wheels IMO. $3,000 damage and a wait of 100 days for all the parts resulting from a slow speed low side, not so fun...
