Light flywheels are they worth it?
I can't wait to see how some of you will like the Hyper with the lightened flywheels, and some of the forum members like Peter are installing lightened cam pullies as well.
I can't help feeling that the light flywheel might give the bike a "JACKRABBIT" feel, and take away some of the bikes smoothness, especially in tight corners, I know that it will make the bike harder to take off from a stop, and as far as I know, the lightened flywheels will not make extra HP, just faster throttle response. Oh yeah, I know the bike will be harder to launch like at a drag strip, and be more prone to bogging.
In my dirt bike days, sometimes we would ADD weight to the flywheels, to
make the bike smoother, more controllable and tractable, especially in slippery
conditions, and made many bikes much BETTER to ride fast.
It seems to me that Ducati would have installed the light flywheel in the bike stock, if they thought it would make the bike run better, and I don't think it wouldn't cost Ducati any extra money at the time of engine assembly to do this.
So I can't wait to here from the forum members after the install, I'm hoping that it all works out well, and everyone likes it. For now I will leave the flywheel stock, and do my motor work first, and wait for your imput, and if everyone ends up giving it the thumbs up, then I'll get the light flywheels. Aloha Alex
PS: I do believe in taking off as much rotating weight as possible off the wheels, tires, and brakes, as this will make the suspension, brakeing, and handling much better!

jim, christian and i were at nichols this am, before heading up to leo vince ... jon nichols wants to do a nichols flywheel installation and photo document the process, using my bike as a mule/
we already have base line dyno run of my hypertard without the flywheel, and will run it on the dyno right after the flywheel is installed, so everyone can see the results.
a presto,
johnc

John, do you think that the lighter flywheel will have an effect on HP/Torque? I'm wondering if Jon can measure rate of acceleration on the dyno. I think that's where the difference will be most obvious.

Wouldn't this show up as a steeper power curve on the printout?

I was told the flywheel does not real add HP on the dyno, it's all about flickability and reducing engine momentum on braking/downshifting for smoother transition, but again what do I know. I am not sure if best combined with slipper clutch.

the bike has plenty of power, i think a set of light weight wheels(unsprung weight, if you dont have the S) some good rubber and time in the saddle to allow you to be comfortable to ride the bike while pushing the grip envelope will make you more faster than engine mods
