Pro Taper problem

I have been trying to fit my Reed Pro Taper contour bar tonight but the front brake line seems too short. It doesn't allow the master cylinder clamp to reach the straight section of the bar. It only reaches to the end of the tapered rising section. I notice a few of you have also fitted these bars. Did any of you experience this problem? The clutch master cylinder only just made it on the straight section as well. I will post a picture to help explain when i find my camera in the morning.

I ran into that problem with my renthal bars, but i was able to get them to work good enough, talked about it here:

handlebars

the other problem i ran into was mounting the stock handguard/mirror/turnsignals. on the stock bars there are notches that keep them inplace, i had to do some rigging to get them to not move when i hit big bumps.

I didn't have a problem installing my Pro Taper Reed bar. Have you tried manipulating the routing of all the cables and hoses? How about the orientation of the banjo bolt?

Looking at it, it looks like you could route the brake hose between the fork and the right side of the instrument panel if you need to. That should give you some room to work...

Thanks for the responses lads.

Scott – I’ve been down and had a play this morning and that’s pretty much what I’ve done. I’ve put the brake line and microswitch cable to the right of the instrument panel mount. When you do this the banjo alignment could be better but it’s only out by a few degrees.

Bfarm – there is no way I’m putting the stock handguard/mirror/indicators back on. I might get sledged for saying this but they are really impractical. I’m a huge fan of handguards, but they should be able to withhold a fair bit of punishment and be cheap to replace. I like high mount mirrors and the stock mirrors are terrible for urban riding/lane splitting. I’ve ordered the high mount DP mirrors with integrated indicators and a pair of Acerbis supermoto guards.

There is really not a lot of room on the straight sections of the pro taper bars for all the controls. There was another member (gssm I think) that put in 10mm spacers. I had a spare domino switch block hanging around that is about 5mm thinner than the stock one so I’m going to use that. Bit of a pain in the bum though as it has a different connecting plug and a shorter cable so I’ll have change it to suit. Even after fitting this it looks like I might have to shorten the grip and throttle tube by another 5mm.

Here's my lane-splitting set-up

I didn't run into the short brake line issue because I switched out the brake master cylinder to a 19x18 and cut about 3/4" off the ProTaper Reed/Henry bars. There was just enough straight bar left for all controls and the stock brake and clutch lines reached.

BTW, that's a mirror from a KTM 990 SuperDuke. I just happened to have one and bar end mirrors of any type don't work for lane-splitting (at least if you're doing it every day like on my commute).

BillyD - I'm going with a similar setup.
