Adding Some Zing!

Got some DP Ergal Cam Pulleys along with a Nichols flywheel. Together they will reduce rotating weight by about 4 lbs or so.

Should be fun

I just picked up a Nichols flywheel and replacement nuts today. I picked up a stock flywheel they had to see the weight savings my freshly purchased would afford and it was surprising. How much weight are you saving with the cam gears? Are you also gong to change out the stock clutch basket?

The pulleys are about a pound. The stock clutch basket is aluminum so probably not much weight savings there with an aftermarket unit. Also have a Supersprox 520 chain kit so that should also save another pound or two.

That flywheel saves about 3 1/2 pounds by itself. Plus 1 pound for the pullys. I added it up once and (if you had an endless budget) you could replace the flywheel, NCR crank, cam pullys, clutch components, etc. and on rotating mass on the engine alone you can save 13 pounds!!!! This thing is built like a tractor, no wonder it revs so slow stock.

Peter, once your done with the motor work, I thinking about 100-105 HP
don't you think the 520 chain conversion will be too weak to handle the extra power? Aloha Alex

Yeah, maybe 100-105hp with the cams and headwork. I'm not doing all this stuff all at once... the flywheel and 520 chain/sprocket is next. I'll have the headwork, cams, pulleys, injector match, mbp valve collets and custom map done when the first valve check is required... about 6k miles. The 520 chain should be plenty good, since they also use the same RK chain on the 1098 and 848. Actually the bike runs great as is and I've got my suspension working well but I can't keep myself from messing with it some more.

I think our first valve service is 7500mi, thats when my bike will come apart
for the motorwork, I have about 4000mi now, and are you saying the 1098
is using the 520 chain set-up? this I have to check..... Aloha Alex

The stock chain on the 1098 is a 525 but 520 conversion kits are available. I have the RK GB520XSO chain.

A 520 chain on a 1098 sounds scarey, back in the day a 125cc bike used
a 428 chain, a 250cc used a 520 chain, and a open class used a 525, many
high HP Japanese bikes use a 530 chain, so to me, a 520 on a 1098 just sounds
overstressed, but that could be just be me.......
