Duc is dead part 2
Well, I got the call from the dealer today. They said that the reason it is running like crap is because the rear cylinder is not holding compression. He thinks that one of the springs on the exhaust valve closers has broken. Has anyone else ever seen a problem like this. This is my first duc so I don't know much about the common duc problems.

Don't think its a common problem, the 1000/1100 DS motor is a well proven
motor, maybe yours was put together on Fri afternoon? sorry about your problem, at least you have a 2 year warrantee. Aloha Alex

I don't think so...The springs are there for enhanced starting. Once started, the spring tension plays very little if no role in engine performance. I've raced DESMO singles without any springs installed. Red Herring in my book.

The first-year (2004) ST3 had a problem with exhaust valve springs breaking. There was a recall. The symptoms were poor idling and low speed performance as I recall.

Well, I got the word today. A cam pully came loose and jumped a tooth. Probably tinged a valve. Waiting on the Ducati service rep to approve the warranty work so they can get started.

Maybe there's more potential loose cam pulleys out there. I for one will be pulling my belt covers and checking. If timing is off, piston to valve collision is possible. Doesn't take much to bend a valve. I know. Thanks for keeping us all in the loop.

Well after waiting 3 days for the Duc service rep to authorize the work they can finally get started on the teardown tommorow. I actually saw what happened and it was the nut that holds the two lower pullys on wasn't tight enough. This let the pullys move just enough that they started wearing on the pullys, the shaft, the keys, and the keyways. It eventually built up just enough wear and slop that the rear valve just tapped the piston. They said best case it would be a week and a half, worst case 3+ weeks depending on parts shipping and condition of the heads and valve guides once they get in there. Wish I had the extra cash, it would be a good time to put in the cams, head porting, pullys, pistons, etc. Oh well, I will be happy to have it just run right again.
