Hypermotard Help me decide!

I went to the dealer and demoed the Hyper. I love this bike. The first question I have is about maintainence. I am sure this has been discussed already but if someone could direct me to the accurate info I would appreciate it. Of couse the dealer says it is minimal and every one else I talk to says these bikes are very maintainence intensive. I would like to hear from owners so I will know the truth. l usually do my own maintainence on my bikes so I am not scared to do it myself but what items are required to be done at a dealer to keep the warranty valid?

Another question I have is about pricing. I will try to deal with the local dealer unless I find a good deal on a clean used bike. What is a good price for a new standard model?

I appreciate any advice on these or any other things I should know.

Well, this is my first Duc also so I'm finding this stuff out for the first time. I like to do my own maintainence and I usually do oil/filter changes at 600 mi and then every 2000 mi after that. Duc recommends 750mi and then every year or 7500 mi. I think that's crazy, but that's just me. Other than that the only difference is valve clearance checks and adjustments. Most Jap bikes say 15,000 to 24,000 miles depending on the bike. Ducs are 7500.

What I decided is that I will do the check up's that I have to to keep the warranty up. That's only 2 visits to the dealer actually. The initial oil change/check over, and the one year/7500 mi service. The next service is due at 2 yr/15000 mi but the warranty is up at 2 years so if you have made it that long you should be able to do it all yourself. After that I will do them all myself.

From what I've seen so far Ducati has alot better warranty than all of the Jap companys, but they also need it more often.

There's nothing that says a dealer must perform that service work in order for you to retain your warranty. Anyone can do it for you -- or you can do it yourself. You merely have to be able to prove it was done if/when your bike is taken in for warranty work, should the dealer actually question whether the work was done. That initial service, which usually amounts to nothing more than an oil and filter change on any bike, for which you're generally charged an arm and a leg (plus a testicle or two), is the biggest scam in motorcycling.
