Finally rode the hyper tonite for 1st time
The rain and snow finally let up in Seattle and I got to ride the Hyper for the 1st time tonight. I had the 2-1-2 full termis, DNA filter, PC3 with custom map installed before I ever rode it. It sounds great! I didnt really get on it to much today since it's my first road bike but I felt very at home with my dirtbike background. The bike is comfortable and confidence inspring.
A few questions: When I started it the idle went up and down a bit until it was warm -is this normal?
I didnt go over 5000 RPMS today and never hit it too hard. The power didnt seem to be as much as I'd thought but maybe I just need to wack it harder?
Throttle response was smooth but not sure how this thing would wheelie in 1st 2nd and 3rd judging from the little power I used. It's probably too early to tell.
I guess I'm used to dirtbikes that wrap up very quick and have short gear ratios. Maybe I should add a few teeth to the rear sprocket. Or maybe I just need to wait till the tires are scrubbed in a bit and hit it harder. I'm hoping this is the case.

Wait.....100 + posts and you rode the bike for the first time today? I expect you will hit 300 posts by the weekend. Glad to hear you're finally on the road.
You may be a bit disappointed in the power. I got my first supermoto, a KTM 625, which put out about 50 HP to replace a Gixxer 1000 which put out almost 150 HP. The first few rides all I could think was "what the hell did I do?" But once I got used to the power delivery, I never went back to the Gixxer. I think you'll find the same thing with your HM.
As far as wheelies go, it comes up easy in 2nd and 3rd with no clutch. I like clutching it up in 3rd, but not necessary. I also have the 2-1 full Termi, but I'm sure the power isn't that different with your set up, so I'm sure you'll have no problems doing the same.
You may have to wait till you break in the bike and start bringing the RPM up a bit. I usually bring it up around 4K to 4.5K RPM, so if you're trying to wheelie the bike and keep the RPMs under 5K, you're going to have to shift pretty quick.
Good luck with your ride and keep us posted.

Parker,
I was the first guy to ride the demo bike my dealer had prior to my purchase. I wacked the throttle and let 'er buck. Wheelies 50 mph down Central Avenue in Phoenix. I did manage to get a few miles on it before I did it. I would not recommend it until you get some miles on the bike though, that stock rubber will be slippery especially if the roads are cold, debris, and/or wet.
Power comes on totally different, but be prepared when it does. It will scare the hell out of you coming out of the corners. I would be real casual for a couple hundred miles then get on it and you will find the power and the thrill.
By the way, I installed the ECU and DNA filter and did the air box mod tonight. I will have to wait for the Zard yet.
Out!

Awesome
Randy,
Thanks for the response. Sounds great to me and I will definitely take your advice. Glad to hear this, I figured it was just me being so ginger on the bike.
I will give her a couple miles before twisting it hard. Glad to hear you got it installed...sucks you have to wait for the Zard. Bet your itching to get it all complete.
I have to say my setup sounds amazing! My Dad was driving behind me today and couldn't believe how throaty she was. Probably enough to deafen squirrels...just how I like it.
Does your idle vary up and down a bit for a minute or two while the bike warms up?
GP637-thanks for the response

Picked up my bike from the shop last Saturday and been ridin everyday. Still stock for now. I had a Tuono before with a full Akra system and I know for sure the HM has plenty of torque but restricted like hell coz of the cat and stock silencers. It has lotsa potential. Like a few here, I'm waiting for my Zard, the Penta. I'm truly itchin...
Been hoisting wheelies lots. In 2nd and shift to 3rd till redline. Landed the bike at about 120kmh. I much prefer to lift in 1st and quick shift to 2nd to get slower wheelies but still getting used to the power bend but to be honest, I'm a bit confidence lacking since I was forcefully stopped from riding. This is my comeback bike after 2 year layoff.
Had my first ride in the rain today. Ok understatement, it was a monsoon storm. Visibility was 100 meters. Loved it! Lotsa torque and with smooth power delivery, no spikes in all rpm range, it was very easy to slide out of the turns and holding it.

I only started the bike once, but it idled smoothly from the second it fired up. RPM was around 1300. Our weather is warm and there is little humidity, so it may not be as finicky due to that. After you get a few more miles on the bike, you may want to run it back into the dealer and ask them to check the fuel settings to make sure.
Out!

I'm not going to be too popular for saying this, but i completely agree,
You are right, coming from the dirtbike world/ATV especially a Honda 450R motor, this bike is no where as easy to wheelie, well not just on pure power alone. First gear the bike will wheelie on pure power, but no where like crf450r. 2nd gear, takes some clutching IMHO, 3rd gear...not possible for me, well at least in stock form.
I didnt by this bike to wheelie though, so I'm ok with the way it is.

Don't think that's accurate Joel. It should wheelie in 2nd and 3rd with no cluch, stock or not. I usually clutch it up, but it will definetly come up without, even in 3rd.

My bike is stock still, so I'm not sure if the addition of a pipe will help. Also i'm not the lightest guy around (220lbs ) I can get it wheelie in 2nd but it wont happen by accident, and it will take a little clutch. 3rd gear hasnt even seen the wheel leave the floor, which is fine by me. Please also understand I have 2 atv's that will flip upside down on you if you dont control them on pure power alone, learning to drag race them took some time. I'm sure it be just second nature controlling the power now a days.

Just a question about clutching the HM up since it was brought up. On my zx10 the only way i would wheelie it was clutching it up. But I tried clutching the same way on the HM but it won't come up that way. I can preload/power wheelie 2nd and 3rd, but nothing with the clutch. I'm sure I just need a different technique than what I was using with the inline four. How do you guys do it on the twin?
