Backing it in is fairly easy with some practice. The Hypermotard is definately capable, though a little heavy, the ergos are similar to a "real" supermoto. I learned riding supermoto on the track and no it doesn't involve "panic braking" as you can tell the tire is still spinning, just slower than the front is. For this shot I gave it some extra rear brake to kick up the smoke, but most of the time coming into a corner like that shouldn't burn up the tire but rather just get it to slide a bit.
Just like learning anything unfamiliar and unnatural to riding start off slow and small. I'll usually come in hard into a corner in 4th gear and hit 2 downshifts into 2nd, hard on the front brakes lightening the rear a bit, as you start to pitch it over, or just before to be safe...feather out the clutch to let it engage and slow the rear tire up into a slide, hit a little rear brake to help out a bit. Once you got it down its alot of fun to slide the bike around. Wheelies are over-rated...its all about backing it in. Its more of a show of skill and won't get you in trouble like a wheelie will.
