I recently destroyed the left hand guard...

I recently destroyed the left hand guard on my new HyperMotard...

My review of the incident:
  • The hand guard is pretty much show only. It shattered like glass (cheap brittle plastic).
  • The stock tool kit worked well. More then adequate to fix the problem on the road side to finish the ride.
  • The Work Shop Manual (CD) is close to worthless. Not worth the $50 at all...
  • Ducati Performance steering dampener was excellent. stopped the impact from violently turning and causing me to go down.

The cost of the incident:
Each hand guard is sold in three pieces too. $208.39 for the mirror, $225.76 for the plastic guard and $245.99 for the turn signal. Making it about $680 per side, so for $1,360.00 for a set. Luckily I didn't have to replace the "turn signal" portion. My bill came to just under $470.00

Out of curiosity, I had the parts guy in the dealership look up the headlight assembly. It looks like the Hyper headlight assembly breaks down into four basic parts, three plastic bits and a headlight. The main plastic piece is at $678.00, and the other two at $145.00 and $73.00. The headlight itself retails at $545.00 A total of $1,441.00 to replace the headlight assembly.

Ride safely,
Bill

A couple of weeks ago I broke my right mirror on a road side marker when I swung wide to cut in on a corner. I replaced my stock mirrors with the CRG Lane Splitters, I am installing Rizoma signals and I am going with Acerbis hand guards like BillyD. I did not want to put more money in the stock parts as they are so frail.

Rizoma signals $74
2 - CRG LS $180
Acerbis HG $90

can you elaborate on your opinion of the workshop manual? haven't used mine yet but "leafed" thru it and it looked ok. not great but ok. no better than the one I get with YZ mxers with the purchase of the bike certainly.

This reinforces a theory that I have had for a while now and it pertains to all European bike manufacturers and not just Ducati.

The bike manufacturers are keeping the prices of bikes artificially low and expect to make profit on the sale of overpriced accessories and spare parts.

For instance, bike prices haven't increased nearly as fast as the dollar has declined vis-a-vis the Euro. In fact, I believe the 1098 sells for less than the 999 (as if that's a good comparison). Same goes for KTMs. Price increases on new bikes have not kept up with non-dollar currency appreciation.

So how do the manufacturers expect to make money? By selling overpriced accessories and spare parts! The above is a perfect example, as are the ridiculous prices for the DP carbon bits, like the heal guards and side panels.

Heck, Gillete has been giving the handles away for free for years just so you buy the overpriced razor blades over and over. Same with Inkjet printers. HP makes more off the cartridges than then they do on the printer itself.

I'm not complaining, just making an observation.

Above is the reason that when the second time I fell over with the HM, I replaced both stock handguards & mirrors with the DP handguards & the DP mirrors with turn signals. They are less than half the price of the stock if I remember correctly.

My incidents - I ride with Draggin jeans around town and twice now I have caught a pants leg on that little bleed off nipple for the clutch. While stopped, I could not get my foot down & slowly tipped over. I now tuck the jeans on my left leg into my boot for even the shortest ride.

I do like the DP guards & mirrors. The guards are real, made by Acerbis, have a nice heavy steel bar in them. Mirrors are just ok, but all in all the bike is much, much better for lane splitting here in CA.

The manual seams to very basic and missing some key information.

For example the brake down of the hard guard in the parts section is missing a piece of unit from it diagram.

I never found an information on where the turn signal correctors were. I just traced the wires back till I found them under the tank.

And once I removed the hand guards and disconnected the turn signals the blinker switch didn't function properly, and the manual doesn't give any information on blinker relay.

If they leave a part of the hard guard it's one thing, but if you use the manual to work on the engine and miss a part it could be a disaster.

Details on the electronics is the main reason I got the manual, but it is very limited. I can't believe this is what the dealership tech use.

When we first got the bike, I told myself that the first thing I would remove would be those combo handguard/mirror/turnsignal contraptions. Well we broke one on the second day before we could do it.

She now sports CRG Hindsight Lane split mirrors. Much more user friendly. You can also use small brackets to mount billet turn signals just under the forward of the tank. They are LED types and work just fine when connected to the stock turn signal wires. The ones we have come with the resistors as well but you won't need them.

I have the The little black DucatiPerformance one. I read all those post too, but I really don't understand what there complaint it. Steering dampener are such a basic piece of equipment, I'm not sure what there looking for. I know there's a lot of professional riders and expert on these message boards that might have a problem with them, but I'm happy with it.

I don't like the Ohlins dial style unit's, just because I don't like the way they look. I had a Ohlins dampener on my 900SS and it didn't function any different then the DucatiPerformance unit does.

I know the unit sopped the mild head shakes I was getting under heavy acceleration and braking. And it exsorbed the impact from me smashing the hand guard...
