I figure the best time to tell that it is worn out and needing replacement is when the clutch slips in the higher gears under heavy throttle.

On that note, my ST2 has the original clutch at 54k miles and my 748 has the original clutch at 25k miles. The clutch plates on the ST2 have badly worn tabs, but the plates still work great. I have a complete clutch assembly ready to go in the bike, but it's been sitting on my work bench for at least 20k miles.

It baffles me that some people change their clutches with only 8k-15k miles on them.

It helps to inspect the plates from time to time. I usually check mine once a year (depending on how much riding), clean it out reguarly and if the stack height is out of spec, you can use old steel plates to bring the stack to the correct height. When to replace is also dependant on type of riding, how hard you abuse the clutch, and probably hp/tq as it could be argued bigger motors are harder on clutches.

Im assuming that clutch wear is only milleage sensitive and not time sensitive, right? For example they recommend you change the belts every 12,000 miles or 2 years. I am asking because I recently purchased a 2000 monster 900 and the clutch seems to have a lot of play before finally grabbing and going. It also makes the chewbacca noise which doenst concern me much but it might be a sign of something happening. The motorcycle is 12 years old but only has 9,000 miles on it.

Heheh search Chewbacca on here and you'll see you're not alone
Clutch probably just needs cleaning.
