Hypermotard 1000 feeling compared to KTM SD??
Hey guys (& ladies)....I've just joined this forum & wanted to ask about the Hypermotard from real owners.
I currently ride a KTM 990 Superduke & I am wanting to switch to a Hyper 1100. I love my SD, but I come from a dirt biking background & love the styling & looks of the hyper...not too mention the aggresive upright riding posistion. My questions are (to any that have ridden a SD), how would you compare the ride to the 1100 hyper...power wise, handling etc...
I'm going to a local Ducati dealer sometime this week to see the hyper more up close & in person. Unfortunately over the phone, they have already sort of indicated that a test ride is out of the question
However, I still want to go & see one in the flesh & they are my closest dealer I know of.
My wife also rides two up with me a lot of the time, so that sorta ruled out my thinking of the 796....
Hope to get some feedback from you knowledgeable folks here on the forum.
Cheers Rob

For Trackdays Sd is better .
Normal road use ..harder ..1100 Evo -sp is really fun on road and wheelies easier than sd
Like both , but The 1100 evo -Sp have somthing i cant put my finger on..more soul maybe .
Sp have higher hadlebars that evo and feels more like an dirtbike .

The SD has more motor for sure but the looks are not as cool (IMO). I had a buddy's SD 990 (carb) for about a week and loved riding it. I also come from a mx background and I found myself doing more silly things on the sd than the hyper. The hyper is really great though and I do enjoy mine. What I don't like is the long distance capacity is tough. Too much wind and buffeting. I assume the same for the sd though. Lots of guys here ride long distances on their hm's but it's not for me. I preferred my R1 or Rc51 for highway. Now I look for every back road I can find.
I think you can ride the hm more like a street bike than the sd. It's got great style and sound and the torque is very good but the top end is lacking next to the sd.
Hope this helps a bit.

I have two mates who have a SD990, I have ridden it once.
Have to say that, for some reason, I found it difficult to steer the bike compared to the HM1100. It also needed revs to come alive, althoug I missed a good punch throughout the whole rev range. Only power wheeled (lifted the wheel from the pavement) in first gear for a short moment, I really had to yank the throttle. I think I still have a picture of this. Braking.... well compared to my HM1100s it did not brake, it scared the shit out of me. An other mate has a Tuono, and he almost had to change his pants when he pulled the brakes on my HM100s :-)... This probably says more about the brakes on the HM1100s
First reaction to my mates when I came off the bike was that it felt like a overpowered moped.... They obviously did not agree and did not seem to like it :-).
I realy like the torque, wide torque band, brakes, engine braking of my HM1100s.

ive had my hyper for a while granted the motor is built the sd was a better but uglier motor. i rode the sd at spykes harley in lafayette indiana. and it was fun but they had pipes on it and it was f-in loud and popped so bad on decel. people were yelling at me. i liked it and wanted it but i couldnt justify the price jump with trade because it wasnt better enough to justify it. it wasnt bad but not worth the jump in money for such a similar bike. but they look awesome worked over. its hard to pick for me.
artkore's bike. r6 subfrmae and tail and a german headlight
mine

One of my good riding buddies has a KTM 990 SD, we do canyons & track-days together, I have ridden his bike many times, so IMHO they are........
1. Top end power, KTM (its faster)
2. Power out of corners, Hypermotard (more TQ)
3. Fast sweepers KTM (more stable)
4. Tight corners Hypermotard (quicker steering)
5. Brakes, Hypermotard (stops faster)
6. Long range ride KTM (bigger gas tank)
7. Suspension, Hypermotard "S" (better overall feel)
8. Track bike, fast tracks KTM, tight tracks, Hypermotard
9. Riding comfort, Hypermotard (better posistion less tiring)
10. Relibility KTM (don't ask)
11. Powerband Hypermotard (larger sweetspot)
12. Fun factor, Hypermotard (makes you do stupid things)
Both bikes are very close, the KTM is like a straight "A" student, the Hypermotard is more like a Hoolagan, a straight "A" student that just discovered GIRLS!
I like the way the Hyper looks & feels better, and besides IT IS a DUCATI! Aloha Alex

Liitle brother used to own a SD990R. Way more top end than my Hyper but brakes are not quite there and it's hard to ride on a track, seems like the ratios are too far apart, whenever you'd shift from 2nd to 3rd you'd either bog the motor down or break traction.
Plus the Hyper is a far more attractive and the 2valve air-cooled growl is sublime.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies so far....& it seems the hyper is leading in the debate...lol.
@ 1sicmofo, thanks for the info. I'll give those guys in NJ a shout if I can't squeeze out a test ride from the 'local' dealer I mentioned earlier. I hope to get out to them by Friday to scope out the hyper they have there....not the sp, just the regular 1100 evo.
I agree with you guys on the good looks of the hyper, but have also gotten very attached to the unique look of my SD...& the sad thing is I have just about all the aftermarket goodies I want on her....sucks that trade ins & retail values deminish so rapidly
In a perfect world I would love to have both the SD & the Hyper....hell who knows, I may even be able to find someone willing to do a straight swop.
cheers for now & thanks again for the replies guys, much appreciated.
Rob
