Need some schooling !!!

Trying to wrap my head around these ecu reflashes and remapping. Is a reflash and a remap the same thing? Also, what is closed loop or open loop mean ? I have a stock 2012 796 and don't know which one I have. And there are slot of scenarios depending on closed or open loop . Just trying to get a better understanding of air/fuel management on these bikes ... Thanks

This might help, I posted this on another thread.

The stock ECU ( Bikes Computer) has a section that will not allow any external device to make changes to it ( such as the PCV), this is called Closed loop. The closed loop area is controlled by the the information the ECU gets from the O2 censor. The optimizer is a stand alone box that plugs in between the stock O2 censors and the ECU. It tricks the ECU into changing the AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) so that it is not set for emissions but instead drivability. The closed loop range is between 0-4000 RPMs.

Surging, the idiots guide (I hope)

Thanks alot !! Makes sense now ! So after 4000 revs the ecu is open to aftermarket commands like a PVC ? No complaints at all on low end power . Plenty of grunt for me!! Looking for some more mid-top end power . Any suggestions without breaking the bank? A full termi exhaust is around $2500 and that's just to much $$$. Can't find any used ones

Also, if you go with a cat delete pipe and reflash ecu so there is no o2 sensor does that make a complete open loop?

Tech - Closed Loop

this link might help you.... it did to me. at least now i understand it better. to answer you post though, our ecu will have 2 stages.... closed which operates from around 0–4000rpm and anything above that it's open. at closed, it uses the data from the O2 sensor and optimizes the fuel to air ratio (FAR) for fuel efficiency and emission. that's where the "stoichiometric ratio is 14.7:1" comes in. this results in the not-so-smooth engine performance more noticeably below 3500 rpm.... above this it starts to sing—welcome to the open loop part. you can remove the close loop by reflashing your ecu. this is my next upgrade for my 796.

The power commander is a good system and a lot of people use it but I'm using a Bazzaz fuel management and it may be worth a look. It cost less and it is a stand alone unit - nothing else to buy. The Bazzaz comes with the O2 sensor eliminators so you can map the entire RPM range. It comes with a map already loaded and it should run well enough for you to get it mapped on a dyno. I also have the autotune module which is helpful if you don't have access to a dyno. I have had this system for almost a year now and couldn't be happier.

When reflashed, the 02s can be turned off. Yes this makes complete open loop. Reflash map lowers Air/fuel ratios (more fuel) and eliminates low speed surgeing

I have a reflash with Bazzaz and running well. A little rich but I purchases the autotune and plan to fine tune my map

Will the richer mixture benefit the mid-top end power ? That's what I'm ultimately looking for

No richer is safer but less power unless your mods need the added fuel. The best thing to do is reflash the ecu to get rid of closed loop then use a bazzaz or pcv and have it tuned to your bike anywhere with a dyno (or get a ducati performance shop to flash/tune your stock ecu to your mods)
