DP ECU Installation
I searched around a bit but couldn't come up with a definitive answer in regards to installing a DP ECU, especially a used one.
Even the local dealers seem to give me conflicting answers so I appeal to the knowledgeable tuners here for help.
1) When installing a DP ECU, is the Factory Ducati scanner required for "activation" or "registering" the ECU?
2) When installing a DP ECU are there any other electronic tools required for the proper installation?
3) Other than the physical replacement of the ECU, what if any adjustments need to be made to the bike? (Throttle position, idle settings, whatever)
4) Once a DP ECU has been installed on a bike, can it be re-installed on another similar bike? I was told they register themselves to your bikes specific ID.
5) Any other pertinent info pertaining to the install of new/used DP ECU's would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Romer

What kind of bike? Ducati changed manufactures for their ECUs in 2009 I think. The 2008's and below require a TPS reset with the Magneti, the 2009 and up Siemans don't need it as they reset themselves. My mechanic friend told me on my 2008 w/DP Cams ECU needed the fuel plussed up on it with the Ducati VDSTS though. Hope that helps.

Sorry you beat me to an edit of my post with more specifics.
Specifically for the 2008 Hyper ( I think it is the 59M or 5AM Marelli ECU.)
Any additional info for the Siemens ECU is also appreciated as it might be helpful for others.
Thanks,
Romer

On my 2007 S4RS, I bought a used full Termi system that came with the DP ECU. I did the install myself & everything worked fine, without me having to do anything but the physical install. Not sure if this was because it had already come off another S4RS, or what?
But, other than also installing a PC3 and getting a custom map via Dyno tune, everything worked out fine!

While I appreciate everyone's replies, I still don't really have most of my questions answered.
With exception of ccemn1's comment of having installed an ECU that came off another bike (I assume that answers #4), I still don't understand this business of "registering" or "activating" an ECU (or if it is even true).
As to Hazzbin's suggestion of having the TPS reset, I appreciate the response, but my aim is to be able to understand and do it all myself.
If it requires special tools, so be it. I'll purchase what I need once I find out what would be the best solution.
Hopefully someone can add to the previous help, and end my confusion.
Thanks again,
Romer

1) When installing a DP ECU, is the Factory Ducati scanner required for "activation" or "registering" the ECU?
No usually not. I bought a used 2008 ECU for exhaust and DP airbox lid and it worked fine after plugging it in.
2) When installing a DP ECU are there any other electronic tools required for the proper installation?
No. Only to reset the TPS.
3) Other than the physical replacement of the ECU, what if any adjustments need to be made to the bike? (Throttle position, idle settings, whatever)
TPS reset. Search the frums for a software called Ducatidiag. You need two cables, a Windows PC and the software itself. Read up on it, once you got the software running it´s really easy to use. If you have questions after you tried it we´re here to help.
4) Once a DP ECU has been installed on a bike, can it be re-installed on another similar bike? I was told they register themselves to your bikes specific ID.
Shouldn´t be an issue, see #1.
5) Any other pertinent info pertaining to the install of new/used DP ECU's would be greatly appreciated.
Make sure you buy the right one. There´s the stock unit, then for the 2-2 slip on, then 2-1 full exhaust + airbox lid and finally 2-1 exhaust, airbox lid + cams.

I installed the Termi 2in1 on my 2008 1100S with race filter, open air box cover and DP ECU, no need to reset the TPS, just runs well.

No problem.

Thank you very much guys. I greatly appreciate it.
I checked out the Ducatidiag (very informative) and ordered my cables.
I'm still curious where this idea of "registration" comes from. At least one factory mechanic, and several owners have told me some form of this story.
Earlier or later versions of ECU's perhaps or just old wive's tales?
Thanks again,
Romer

The 999 ECUs could be coded when you put them into your bike in order to activate the immobilizer. That ECU would then only work with the matching key (and dash? I forgot...) and could not be used with another bike then. Unless you sent it off to the dealer or people like TomTom to get the immobilizer deactivated.
