796 Handlebar Upgrade Issue

so today i finally found some time to mount my GPR and a new "real" handlebar (Protaper Contour Pastrana MX low 800mm) that's needed on the new handlebar clamp. i managed to remove the grips, ground the locating pins w/o a single issue.... then BOM! crap, the flat part of the handlebar where everything is mounted is not long enough! without the pins some of the parts are rotating on the bar but that's easy to fix. the slots at the end of the bar that hold the guards are easy to make (grinder).... the brass end that the guard uses to grab unto the inside of the bar is now too large but that's also easy to make smaller (friend's lathe).... but what the heck am i suppose to do with a "short" handlebar? if i push the brake levers further into the centre then that part of the handlebar gets thicker and makes the lever tilt up (not inline with the grips). i might be able to dremel the brake clamp to position but i really rather not. not to mention at this point there's no more room for the 0.3" i will need to mount the stock hand guards. has anyone successfully changed their handlebars and still had everything else mounted like stock?

i'm not sure what everyone did. is it because i bought a pastrana and not the carmichael? the specs seems to point that the 2 are the same in that area. am i wrong? i also found a shot of the 2 and they do look the same in terms of the straight section.

by the looks of it i might have to install shims on the stock 7/8" steel handlebar so i can still use the GPR w/o any mods on the controls.

any suggestion is appreciated.

barely enough room for the grip.... no more for the handguard. 7" to the end of the polish portion. controls need about 8.4" of straight portion. 0.3" for the handguard+5" grip+1.8" turn signal control+1.3" space & brake

i found this pix on another posting showing the pastrana and carmichael. i just showed it side by side. you can really see the difference of the stock to the protapers.

It sounds like those are just a bad bend for all the crap dangling off a hypers bars. Cut down the grips or loose the oem hand guards for a more universal fiting pair.

even if i cut the grip shorter and let go of the whole hand guards altogether it's still not going to be right unless i compromise the position of the brake levers in relation to the grip. the hand guards are only using 0.3" per side. i'm contemplating installing extensions to the bar but that will probably be too wide for me since i'm only 5'5".

my conclusion so far: the bends on the Pastrana is just too wide leaving very little room for the controls of the HYM or Monsters or Multistrada (as I've read). I can't imagine how the others have been able to install the Carmichael unless it's really substantially longer.... without compromising on the positioning of the controls.

There's a Rizoma 22mm bar but will that be a functional improvement over the stock? it's still 22mm (7/8"). And of course no specs on the length of the actual straight portion.

It looks like the 796 has non radial master cylinders and a 7/8" bar not a fat bar (1 1/8") like the 1100. That limits your selection since most 7/8" bars also have a cross bar mounted on them. Try out a good off road shop and compair bar to bar most mfg dont specify how much of the bar is flat just the rise sweep hight and width.

does anyone have a stock 1-1/8 bar from their HYM... from their 1100? are those aluminum? that's gotta be better than the (7/8) 22mm steel right?

First thing I noticed was the clutch resevoir being integrated into the lever, I thought, yeah, that's gunna take up some room! Bummer dude. Maybe a set of motox bars with the cross-bar that unbolts?
