Hyper or smt

Can some of you guys tell me the pros and cons of the hyper over the smt. I had a test run on a smt yesterday and was very impressed. As i have already said that my decision is down to an evo sp corse or a ktm smt. Having in mind that my last hyper was 2009 standard, I imediatly noticed a big difference in the grunt of the smt. As i havn't got a test run on the corse yet i was wondering if she would have the same pick up.

The hyper is more of a funbike, a bike you take out for a short ride( ~200km ) just to enjoy riding a motorcycle. For me, it is extremely unsuitable for long distance travel, and that's why I bought it. It's a nimble piece of kit with no compromises. It's basically a naked streetbike with a supermoto exterior.

From what I've heard, the 990 is better for all-round fun, and has more options for luggage, but it is also a bit heavier, and indeed, has the grunt to overcome that. It should have a larger "breath" in higher speeds, whereas the hyper has bigger torque per pound(and in general).

I haven't tried the EVO yet, but I'd doubt it will be any different than my '08 hyper S, besides the lighter flywheel that is.

The KTM has more HP, the Hyper has more TQ, the SMT "T" for touring is better on a long road trip, the Hyper is lighter with better brakes, with a "wild child" personality, the KTM is more of a straight "A" student.
Since I'm long done with school, I think the Hyper is a funner bike to ride, & IMHO I like it better, & after all its a DUCATI, but "both" are excellent bikes. Aloha Alex

New to this forum but not new to KTM. I presently own a 2008 Super Duke. Really like the LC8 motor. I rode a KTM track day at Mid-Ohio this past summer. They had RC8s and SM-Rs. I rode the SM-R five out of six sessions. I really enjoyed the big supermoto. Now I'm looking to get a Hyper or an SM-R. Never rode a Hyper and not sure if I'll be disappointed with it being use to the power delivery of a KTM 990. I think there will not be any issues enjoying the L-Twin motor. Willing to give it a go if I can sell the SD. I will continue to lurk on this great forum you guys have and learn more of what I want next in a motorcycle.

Ciao'

Both are great

Two good choices, both are great bikes but they are different tools for different jobs. I am fortunate to have a HPM and an SMT and as stated earlier the HPM is great shorter ride bike and really rocks but the SMT is the bike I take if I am going longer distances or want to be a bit more laid back.

I find the SMT to be really light for what it is, comfortable, with great manners and plenty fast enough.

The Hyper is ........ more hyper, big fun in a different way. The choice is personal, how do you ride, how much, how long, how hard etc.

Can't go wrong with either bike.

Best of luck.

well i had a hyper from 09 to June this year and regret selling it. I got up on Christmas morning and the wife has paid a deposite for a new corse for me. What a huge surprise. I'm still gobsmacked. After having test ridden the smt, i'm afraid of making the wrong decision as i thought the smt was so comfortable.

I've had the pleasure to have had both.

Hyper is my preference but I just couldn't do more than 100 miles on it and I was wishing to get off and walk about. Like others have said, if it was short and/or spirited riding all the time, it would be Hyper all the way. At 6'2" with one bumm knee, I could never get comfortable on the bike for longer rides. On the track, Hyper was a blast - even for this novice.

If you were looking for more of a 1 bike quiver, the SMT is the way to go. KTM is physically bigger which is a plus for me. KTM has tons more motor with an instant hit of power with a slight twist of the throttle. KTM provides 200 miles to a tank and no pain in running it dry. KTM does pick up weight (420 vs 390) due to water-cooling. Bags and tail rack are a nice bonus and the little windscreen does its job. I have read suggestions to lower/raise the forks 10mm to make it more "sporting" but I haven't tried it yet.

Both bikes need an exhaust and air restrictions removed to pep them up. Akro pipe, map and SAS removal really solves all the fueling/surging issues on the KTM that gets mentioned a lot.

KTM is no slouch when the road gets twisty but is much more liveable on the superslab. There is no fluff in the KTM parts. Dirt bike heritage is quite evident with the parts looking quite a bit more substantial. Radiator does make the side plastic stick out and the styling is on the fugly side.

If you wanted a more direct comparison, give the SMR a go. LC8 is one heck of a motor.

Hyper Evo specs:
Engine Displacement to Weight (cc) 2.86
Horsepower (bhp) 95
Horsepower (kW) 69.9
Horsepower RPM 7500
Torque (Ft Lbs) 75.9
Torque (Nm) 102.9
Torque RPM 5750

KTM SMT specs:
Engine Displacement to Weight (cc) 2.3
Horsepower (bhp) 115
Horsepower (kW) 85
Horsepower RPM 9000
Torque (Ft Lbs) 71.5
Torque (Nm) 97
Torque RPM 7000

here is my dyno sheet stock for stock on new vs old, i came off an aprilia sxv 550 , and personally waited for the 2010 motor as the older model just did well not much for me, the difference in HP on paper doesn't look much..but the way they make power is, and with a flash tune and some stacks you can easily push 97-100 rwhp, my bike picked up 11 rwhp and some torques with these mods, the older mtr needs alot more work to reach near this hp...i am not saying mine is better just that when i came off a bike with 70 rwhp and a light frame , i expected more from the hyper, and am glad i waited for the bike i have now, as it rips..feels much more mx-ey..

oh here is the after mods map, there is a 4th one i cant find it sorry, this was the third map from pro-tune the 4th is a tad better and a nicer AFR

so my feeling is (and after having a KTM450SX) keep throwing money at it....ducati's are something to love KTM's look cool until the new one comes out...there will always be something faster, better looking etc, but ducati's well to me they always look good, and when you are on the ferrari of bikes who cares if something blowes past you once in a while....thats life hey..buy what fits you when your ontop of it, like a good..welll...errghhh for some reason the upload function is not working..if you would like to see the dyno sheets let me know and i'll try again later john

I don't know if I have a "good" batch old hyper, but my engine feels quite adequate. I have the termi 2-2, DP ecu and adjusted fuel trim(this was really noticable), and my bike does 235km/h on the clock, which most hypers cannot reach from what I've read. Compared to my brothers KTM 525 with 580cc kit and titanium everything, my bike is a bit more chunky, but it's not slow. However, I would love some extra torque, seems like the EVO doesn't have significantly more.

Maybe I have to try an Evo once, but the first hyper is pretty fast too(only thing it lacks is ground clearance)
